How do I manage triggers when being at home is where I drink

for 10 år siden 0 421 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi TS! You are right. If you haven't the stress of dealing with alcohol at home it really takes the stress off. I feel stronger every day--- not to be to confident because remembering will help me not to repeat.  Home is where my heart is! Lol!

Hi ND,

I think you've nailed it! Following your own guidelines will be a prescription for success. I too did almost all of my drinking at home and alone. I turned my refuge, my sanctuary into a scene of regret. There was not a single room that I hadn't sullied. Even the sanctity of my bedroom had been corrupted by alcohol.

Now, my home is the safe haven it should be and free of the blight of alcohol. Yes, it isn't easy, but the payoff is immense.

Another AF day is worth it's weight...

Hi everyone!  I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately.  And from time to time this is a struggle I have.  Home is where I was most comfortable drinking....so how do you exist in your home and not have constant triggers? I've decided the best answer is time, a resolve, planning and hangovers.  The circle of these three things.  Here's what I'm thinking.....

Resolve--You have to dig your heals in and make a resolve to make a change in your life.  Only we can decide to make this change. Only we can make the resolve to stop the maddness and get control over our life. No one can decide for us no matter how much they yell.

Planning--It takes time for your brain to rewire so you have to plan to be busy---plan for your brain to say let's drink. Plan for slow times.  Plan to get healthy again.  Plan for situations when we have to say no.  (I'm a bad planner--that's something i need to work on)

Hangovers--hangovers help because if you have a setback after you've been AF for any length of time you are knocked for a loop, if you have a slip and then get a hangover.   I say this from experience because, once I felt really great then I could really see how bad a hangover is.  Once you get out of the haze of alcohol you can really feel what it does to your mind/body/spirit once you fall back in it.

My example of this is this past Sunday, my husband said to me...."I think you would like to drink today. It's been a while and the thiming is right for you to binge.  I'm here for you."  I said back...."you know what, the thought hadn't occured to me until you mentioned it just now.  You might be right though on my AV working silently on me.  BUT---here's the thing....while my AV might want a drink.  The rest of me DOES NOT want a hang over. Those are just not worth it...."

Home is my favorite place....I want it to be AF and I enjoy my home more when it's AF....Life is better without alcohol and so is home.  Planning and wanting are the key's I think.   Just my thinking on this subject, anyway. :-)

Hope you are all well!

Hi Sharon9sharon,

Welcome, so glad you've taken the plunge. How are you feeling today? The first week or two can be a challenge so stick close to the site to reinforce your resolve. The more you post and share your challenges, the more support you will receive. Often times just talking through your issues will shut your AV down. Try to write a blurb in your diary every day. I also find it helps to write your thoughts in your blog. You may find reading other members blogs can be most helpful.

What are some of the tools you are employing to help you maintain your momentum? Are you reading any self help books? Are you sharing your journey with friends and family?

Be sure that we are here for you and that you can win this challenge.

Hi Emily
So proud of you for posting. I am the same I drink one glass which leads to another etc. I have tried to cut down however that doesn't work for me. So as of yesterday I have decided to quit drinking. It is a little scary but on the lip side it is also freeing!
I just wanted you to know you are not alone
Blessings

I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one.  For me drinking at home and wine are my biggest challenges.  This is not my first attempt at quitting either but this website is giving me hope. Day 1. Previously tried cutting down but since I didnt do well at that, goal is to quit this time.

Hi mcaodha, The last time I have been sober for 6 months, I used to drink non-alcoholic wine when I was having dinner with friend who had wine. Some were nice and I did not think about the alcohol effect. It was more of having a drink in a wine glass with my friends. Psychologically, it did the job while having dinner. I don't know about drinking it in other occasions and if going to the liquor store to buy it would have trigger the switch to alcoholised wine.
