How do I manage triggers when being at home is where I drink

for 12 år siden 0 557 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone,

By the way, I don't drink pop, never did because I don't like the taste so I stick to water and tomato juice.
I am happy I am seeing clients tonight at 7 so I cannot drink (although I did many times see clients while I had been drinking) and I was scared about the 4th day but my children have invited me over for dinner tomorrow. I think it will be the first time, they don't see their mother drinking wine with dinner or not taking beers from their fridge. lol

I think this weekend will be the hardest. I started drinking almost everyday when I started college and I am aiming at being sober when I turn 54 on March 1. Should be 2 months!!!! But one day at the time

Hi Dena.....wow 12 years old is a very young age trove drinking.  I tried to drink my first time at 14 and got so sick I didn't drink for a long time after that.  I was a very casual drinker 3-4 times a year until about 3 years ago when somehow it went out of control.  I'm going to be 47 February 3 and I'm hoping to be a month sober.  It's definitely going to be difficult to do andim not even sure I CAN do it, but I will give it every effort.

Eating has never been a problem for me.  I eat normal but when I drink wine, I crave chips and then I am out of control and eat too many and feel disgusting afterwards,  I have been avoiding wine....lol.

It might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about things.  He may offer some help for you.  I can't see my doctor until April, she's always overbooked, but if I'm still having trouble with abstinence I'm going to ask her for a prescription to help me stop.

Well off to work.  Have a good day.  Stay strong.  Ttyl.

Thnx Camiol,

I think that's great idea to keep in touch. I feel that accountability is a big factor for me. I'm hoping as well to find someone to connect with that has been sober a long time for some advise and support.

I should also clarify I've been drinking since I was 12 yrs old (I'm 38) but I had quit completely five years ago when I became pregnant with my daughter (and for several months after she was born). I started to drink sporatically (on special occasions - at home of course!) and established a pretty set pattern about six months after I returned to work.

I think eating properly will be a big challenge as well. I binge eat when I drink and then eat very little for a day or two. I have an appointment with my doctor for something unrelated tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should tell him.

After all it's that accountability part.

ttys,

Hors I hope you don't mind but can I suggest you limit the amount of colas you drink (if it's cola you're drinking) because although they are great in helping curb the urge to drink, it can be detrimental to your health in the long run.  See below for the cocktails I suggested to Dena....maybe you'll like them also, or they'll give you an idea of something else similar that will satisfy you.

Its great to see you're also on day two.  It gives you, Dena and me a sense of what each of us is dealing with as we try to abstain.  I hope you and Dena will agree that we can become a source of support for each other.

Hi Dena.....I typically would come home and pour myself a glass of wine or mix a drink minutes after I got in the door.  I am also on day two of abstinence and I admit its not easy.  I've gone as long as one week without alcohol, and for me, the fourth day is always the hardest.  If I can get beyond day 4 I start to feel better and I feel less and less needy where alcohol is concerned.  Like you, my dependence hasn't been that long, it's been about three years for me.  I thought that maybe being an alcoholic for not such a long time would make it easier to stop....boy was I wrong.  An addict is an addict whether it's a year or a lifetime....it's hard to stop.  You mentioned you mixed coolers with pop and lime juice.  I make a similar non alcohol drink and I think you'd like it.  I mix about 1/2 cup of diet cranberry juice with a can of Canada Dry low sodium club soda and a twist of lime with lots of ice.  It's a great drink and I find it really does help with the urge to drink.  I also make virgin mojitos with fresh mint, lime, no calorie sweetener, club soda and again lots of ice.  I always drink them with a straw, it gives that feeling of a cocktail.  I'd like to keep in touch if you'd like.  I think you, hors and I could be great support for each other.  Congrats on two days!

@hors controle,

Thanx for sharing that! It's funny, I like to drink after I eat (we eat really early in my house at 5:00 pm) then I eat again before I go to bed. I compensate my night eating by eating very small meals during the day and working out a lot.

I'm on my third can of diet pop too.  I'm gonna go curl up in my bed and watch tv. Tomorrow will be tougher, anymore than two days and then I get moody and antsy.

Hope to say hi again hors control.

Hi Dena,

It is my second day also and usually I start drinking around 4 because this is when I start being hungry. So today I made myself a pot of Knorr Veggie soup. It is very cold outside here today so that comforted me but I started missing that drink so I had dinner around 5:15. I find it is easier if I have food I can warm up and eat earlier. When I drink, I just don't eat or snack. Since I don't want to snack, I'd rather have dinner early.

When I was living with my husband, I always waited to have dinner with him so the kids could have dinner with their dad. Since he often came back late, I often had time to have 2 bottles by the he got home. If I cannot have an early dinner, I try to have non alcoholic beverage and lots of water. You can post as much as you feel too. I guess you have to find something you like to drink...

So this is only my second day here and just heading into my second night without a drink. How does someone address a "trigger" for drinking when being at home is my trigger.

I generally get off of work and stop at the liquor store, get home, crack a drink (mix a cooler with some pop and lime juice) and slowly work my way into a night of drinking until I go to bed around 11:00 am. This happens 2-3 nights a week and 1-2 weekend nights.

So other than my husband, nobody knows I do this and I have been doing this for about 2 and a half years consistently.

So I walk in the door and bam! thinking about a nice cold drink to lull me into a numb state. It's funny, even as I type that I know it's a lie.

Anyone else have the same problem? How did you deal with it?

(hope it's okay to write on here a lot, I'm just not sure until I have some kind of program what to do with myself).

Thanx!

Dena
