Hello, I am also new to the support group. Ive had panic attacks since I was 19 years old and that was back in 1979. I also started going to the hospital and doctors and they also could not find any thing wrong. There wasnt to much information back then. I feel that it runs in familys also. My brother had them also after I did, but his came when he was older. My youngest son showed signs of it when he was 5 years. I Just learned that after going to the doctors and that they could not find any thing wrong with me, and I lived threw each attacks, I started not being afraid of them. Thats when I realized that they were going away and less intense for me. I believe I was scared or feared of embrassement if I had a panic attack in front of people or places and I would avoid going to places. Especial if I had attack at a certain place. I did not go on any medication during that time. When my brother was going threw his panic attacks he had to leave work also and he had three little childern and a wife. His safe place was at my moms house. He went to doctors and had a complete check-up and was given a clean bill of health. He and his wife started looking for books on nerves and came across a book called hope and help for your nerves by Claire Weeks and that was a great revelation for him and I. That was the only thing that we ever seen or heard that explain our symptoms, what is going in our bodies and how to cope with the symptons at that time. It was a book that we keep to remind us that were ok and not going crazy or dying. There has been great gains on panic attacks since then like therapy, books and tapes. I do suffer with the symptoms still,if I don't get enough sleep, don't eat right and add to many things to my already busy schedule. Ive had all the symptons that have been mentioned by most of the people I have read on this support group. It really freaks you out when a new symptom arises and throws you into panic mode again. I wish that I had found a site like this years ago. It brings comfort to know that your not alone and with this disorder a person needs to be reconfirmed that they are really ok.

Hi Rachel, You said that you can help your child cope with anxiety. My daughter who is 4 has started showing signs of anxiety - probably due to me - how would I help her cope? I dont want her to end up like me! My elder daughter is the opposite - very laid back. My panic attacks started a couple of months after I had my youngest.

Starsher: I've never read that panic and anxiety disorders come from something tramatic. They can but don't always. I have had anxiety problems for as long as I can remember. Even before any of the tramatic experiences I have had. I was telling my counselor the other day that I can already see my son is showing some anxiety problems. He is only 5(in Nov) and I can see it. She said I may not be able to prevent an anxiety disorder, but I can help him learn coping skills at this young age. Then he may be able to deal with his better if he does indeed develope one. My son hasn't been through anything too traumatic. He has a very stable home life. Rachel

I've experienced anxiety for much of my life. One experience I had as a child was losing my mother to cancer at age 10. I've seen a therapist since 1995 and it's helped so much. She's helped inspire me to exceed beyond areas I never imagined. But anxiety hangs on strong sometimes and then sometimes it's gone. I have a few good days and a few bad moments, then you struggle through those moments to get to a safe area where you feel good again. I was on anti-depressants for many years and I felt they dumbed me down too much and just stopped serving a purpose. I often had anxiety and depression while on them, so I got off them and have felt great at times off them, but just like when I was on the, I still have bad moments, but get past them. I now use valium for bad times and it does its job. I had trouble as a child even before my mother passed away. I'd often wake up scared and screaming. My therapist calls them night terrors. Today's problems may have been spured on by news events and the fact that I am staying at my parents house to watch their dog while they are visiting my sister and family. Home is always the safest place. Feel free to add anything you want, David

I saw your post and wanted to respond . It is common to anxiety disorder to do well for a couple of days and then be totally out of sorts the next. It for me is also the most frustrating, I can be fine one hour and the next be a total wreck.I can drive to the store at 10am but I cant make myself do it at 12. This sounds very crazy but it is the truth. Also I wish someone would respond to this, all the info on anxiety and panic disorder suggest youve experienced some tramatic childhood experience , I have given this a lot of thought and I cant come up with any horrible thing. makes me think Im repressing some single incident. Does everyone know what caused their anxiety but me?

Today was my day for falling off my game. I was fine, but started paying too mch attention the the election and then heard something about terrorism on the radio and I had a few panicky/anxious moments. Going to the gym helped, but I took a 1/4 of a valium just as a safety precaution. I did an hour on the stair climber and my a workout and talked with many people while there, so that all helped. I am an avid fitness lover and it always helps. I had ignored the news for a few weeks because it upsets me often, but I started watching again because there's only a few days left until Nov. 2, but I think I had a good formula of just ignoring the news. One problem is I work for the news. LOL. Newspaper, but I can also ignore it there because I do not work on ay national or world news issues. So, I got through this and aso got my relaxation CD in the mail. It's Dr. Miller. Gonna use it before bed. Thanks for listening, David

Hi CanadianMel, I have recently sought comfort in this website as a type of alternative to medicinal therapies. Strangely enough, I am experiencing similar symptoms to those you mentioned in your post - sudden dizziness that tends to initiate feelings of anxiety, annoyance and especially frustration. I have decided to note [in electronic calendar form] every feeling of extreme dizziness, what food I've consumed that day & any other potentially useful information. Hopefully over a series of months a pattern may emerge that will explain the chaos. Thanks for your post - I am no longer alone.
