Are we really being honest with ourselves?

I too have gained and lost the same ten pounds at least three times in the past 12 weeks. It comes back seemingly overnight and then takes weeks to work of- I want to say that it's happening for no reason, but I know that I am the culprit! What I've figured out so far is that it doesn't take much extra in the way of food intake to set off the gaining. I started keeping track of every calorie I'm consuming and really, it's shocking. It seems like I'm not really eating anything throughout the day, but somehow I've taken in 1200 calories!!! That's about all I need! My body is incredibly sensitive to certain food and I'm really sensitive to sodium. So, I've been lying to myself- Thinking I'm the victim of the stop smoking curse, when really it's just me being a hog! Am I alone in this? Has anyone else tracked calories and sodium to see where the are? And I mean track every bite...Not just a rough estimate.

Hi Shanny I too am on the weight gain fast train. So I can oink with you. I started keeping track of my calories and thought what's the deal I'm not eating bad things. The problem is in my amount of intake. Oh I eat a Good Meal of low calories but I make up for it in the amount. My husband is shocked on the amount that I can shovel in. I know I have to stop this and get back control. I have gained 10 and on a good water weight day we can say 13 to 14 pounds. The sodium is terrible. At the beginning of my quit my whole body was swollen. I looked like an ompa lumpa. (how ever you spell it, you know like on the movie Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I know also that my big problem is eating out. The women in my family don't like to cook, we marry men that do or divorce them and find one that does. And that is not a joke. My hubby doesn't cook but he likes to go out. So he's been a keeper. haha. But you can imagine how tough it has been for me to try and stay home and learn how to cook low fat, THIS HAS NOT BEEN EASY, and to learn that eating like a bird for so many years was a good thing not a bad thing. One thing for sure quitting smoking has bought to light so many new and exciting things in my life. No one that knows me would ever had thought that it would bring me to my kitchen. Since I quit smoking middle age-ness has hit me like a ton of bricks! I'm not at all happy about losing my teen figure. But not only have I gained weight, my basic shape has changed. I look round, soft and bloated all over - except my feet and hands. I look in the mirror and wonder where I went. Then I hear the nicodemon....and fiercly fight him back. I, too, started counting all of my calories. I'm trying for 1500, but usually end up around 1700 or 1800. I am barely able to fit back in to two pair of my larger pre-quit pants. I've found that I have to account for each little food-energy unit I take or I'm sunk. Each one sticks to one or the other of my buttocks in an irregular pattern. I've been doing this half-heartedly. I must become relentless in my quest to regain my former body. The good news is that I had to buy larger bras! As long as my chest sticks out farther than my belly, I'll be pretty content, but not entirely happy. Sigh..... gpw My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 96 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,440 Amount Saved: $384 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 21 Mins: 16 Seconds: 15

GPW ~ I am totally with you! I can even especially relate to the bigger bra comment, as can my husband. He loves my new figure, which what he means is the new fuller chest! LOL I am not one to watch what I eat but I by no means "pig out", and I do not want to deprive myself of my new found taste buds, so I started working out and honestly, it hasn't helped, I am not gaining anymore weight, but I am also not losing any either. Its a double-edged sword! Hi, ShannyOcean. When I started a fitness program several months ago, I had to start tracking what I ate. I was totally shocked at all the c**p I was shoving into my face. Cheetos, brownies, crackers, Snickers bars, ice cream, Pepsi, mixed nuts. Each occurance was one small event, essentially meaningless and invisible in itself. But add them up over a day and **PLUMP**. So I started cutting them out, one by one ($!@#$!more deprivation!*!*). When I started craving them I thought I was also a carb addict on top of nicotine. Sheee, here we go again!!! But I soon found that lean meat was just as appealing as carbs. I wasn't craving carbs, I was habit-eating. Now the morning brownie, the Pepsi and cookies with lunch, the afternoon Snickers bar, and the evening bag of Cheetos are pretty much as foreign now as they were common last year. I haven't tracked sodium but with Cheetos, nuts, etc., I'm probably better off not knowing what I was doing to me. :8o: Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 331 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,622 Amount Saved: $1257.8 Life Gained: Days: 61 Hrs: 17 Mins: 25 Seconds: 24

I was so used to sitting down to dinner and eating TWO helpings of everything, but I cooked it and it was good (usually). Well, I've stopped doing that. In the beginning of my quit,I kept a little spiral notebook in my purse and I wrote down everything I ate. That was a big help. But I'm not a numbers person so I can't count calories, but it did show me where I was eating junk. Now I've joined sparkpeople (com) and they have a great tracking system. I'm also tracking my sodium in there, and it's amazing how much salt there already is in food! Join us on the Daily Diet Watch thread!
