Therapeutic Effects of Gardening

There are already a few areas that have got this project up and running so we can at the annual meeting get advice from them but right now our concern will be with our area because of the isolation. And because we are spread out so far it will be hard getting people involved. There will be far more people needing help than those willing to help. The Govt. still has a "where is your family" attitude. Because of the lifelong nature of this condition a lot of people are the last of their family, there is no one. Or if there is they may be on the other side of the country or world even.
Whether this idea can work will depend on dedication. Like CBT, it can only work with dedication.
The reason I think that to be part of it a person has to have experience is to prevent people from joining who only want a chance to do things their way. It really is not about us but about those who have needs. I will do my part to keep it afloat.
My biggest fear is that like so many things with good intentions it will die before it gets off the ground.

This really does sound like a worthwhile project that will help many..Especially people with anxiety disorders...I sure can sympathize with they when they are in a hospital and have to leave their pets behind not knowing who will care for them..and also the part about not knowing how to go back home without support system in place..These were real issues for me when I did treatment with cancer drugs for liver disease here at home all alone and also after my last two stays in the hospital...There is always the worry that no one will be there to help me when I go home..Like this surgery they are talking about doing..Who will help me later..Will the people I thought cared about desert me in the hospital again..Why would I want to have surgery that may disable me more than I already am..I need to be less depend not more dependent..  I know lots of questions..bouncing around in my head...This is how it is for those of us that have had to depend on ourselves for everything most of our lives..This is part of the anxiety and panic that we feel..I think what you are doing to help others like us is wonderful Davit..your being a advocate for others may make it easier for all of us who find ourselves in situations where we need help. You can be a voice for many and with that voice they will not be invisible anymore..and may be some help will be sent there way because of you and your voice..You can make the powers that be aware of this great need..

It is very late here. I am finished with the Basil till it grows back up again. Back to scratching in the dirt tomorrow if it isn't raining too bad. I have some other herbs to dry too. More Lemon Balm for tea. It is growing real well. The lavender I stuck in a flower bed is taking hold. I put Lemon Balm out there too. I want to let some flower just to see what it looks like. I have some tractor work to do also and the lawns need mowing. Never a dull moment. The pressure is off and that is a good feeling. There will be time to just sit if I want now. and that I think is what it is all about.

The voice in My computer (vicky) just told me it is time to go to bed.

I will only be one of three directors and there will be as many others as we can interest to get as much input as we can. It is Tracy's project but she can not be directly involved. Only the three of us as far as I know have to have or  have had a mental condition. It is mostly about how to help those that have no other means of support and I know all about that. Simple things like how to get people out of their homes. How to care for there pets if they are sent to hospital. How to get them home when they are released. None of this is available right now. There will be other things too I'm sure. Imagine a person with a cat or dog as their only friend and family who gets sent to the hospital for three weeks. Imagine the fear leading up to it even. I think we can do something about it.

Hi Hugs,
Hope you tomatoes are looking better tomorrow or the next day..It took mine a day or two to adjust to being in the ground..I use 1 tablespoon of liquid plant B vitamins to a gallon of water to help prevent transplant shock when I transplant any plants into the ground..It works for me every time. You can get it at lowes or home depot in the garden center it comes in a gallon jug.

As for the Nevada and front lawn removal..I guess I will have to check it out on line..Concrete is not a option for me because my front yard is very large and on a incline..The cost would be very high to have that done..I don't have the money for that..Landscaping in rock or crushed granite is a option, of course I would have to find someone who does rock gardens and then get estimates..We can not do the work ourselves anymore..

I have 2 incisional hernias now from the kidney surgery I had last year..so no more heavy lifting or heavy gardening for me anymore. This has gotton me down a bit. I met with a surgeon today to discuss surgery and was told he can not guarantee that I will be able to work in the garden again even if I have surgery or that my pain will go away and that I may be in worst pain after surgery..So for now my gardening days are over and I am getting a second opinion from another surgeon in a couple of weeks..I might start looking for new location to live with less yard maybe a desert community or something..It may be time to downsize now..

Lots of adjustments and lots to think about...

Red,
The hose in your avatar background reminded me of the Nevada incentives for removing front lawns.  I was stunned to hear they only have 4 inches of rain a year, and how they conserve water is ingenious.

Hi Davit,
I have been a bit busy lately with Dr's, surgery consults and diabetes management classes so I haven't posted lately but do read posts here most every day.

I read your post last night and wanted to stop in and congratulate you on your position as a director making sure that grant money funds are used in the best way to help the people in your community that need help..Working along side your therapist on her project must be very exciting and being able to give back and help your community will be very rewarding I am sure. Your first hand real life experience and your experience with others that you have know and helped will help many I am sure now..

I am so happy for you Davit..It looks like you are getting closer to what you wanted to do, helping others with panic and anxiety disorders..

Please keep us updated as permitted and allowed.

Hi Davit,

Just wanted to comment what a valuable resource you will be helping the community direct funds to support those with addictions and mental health issues.  Your knowledge and support will help them greatly.

Hugs

What could go wrong. Tomatoes do look wilty the day after but usually pick up. Don't over feed or the leaves will curl.
Remember that plants get some of their food from the air by absorbing nitrogen and replacing it with oxygen. So they don't need as much fertilizer as we think. You can also remove half the leaves and bury the stock, roots will form on it. This is recommended for tall leggy transplants. I'm not a tomato person so have only one cherry tomato and eight beefsteak.

One year I bought potting soil from Home hardware. It looked good but was as dead as could be. Nothing grew very well in it and I got a lot of Damp off. So I'm back to making my own. One third garden soil, one third peat moss, one third compost, And some bone meal or crushed egg shells. No fertilizer. No blood meal, it attracts flies.

My transplanting of tomatoes didn't work so well last night.  I feel so emotional about it, as though it's life & death!

I added some potting soil, water, and will add fertilizer on the weekend.
