Excercise & watching what I was snaking on! I was a lot of excercise in my routine before I gave up smoking, so I had to increase it. Even with extra excercise I still gained a couple of pounds the first couple of weeks but it leveled off after a couple of weeks ! Hi, I am on my third day of Chantrix. I am determined to quit, but I do worry about gaining weight. The last time I quit for three years, and gained twenty pounds. I do not want to gain any more. I am in need of some tips on how to quit and not gain weight. Any thoughts? M

I walk too, started at 15 minutes at a time, as far as it took me and then build up from there, till you can get in 30 - 40 minutes a day. I also lift weights 3 times a week, light ones, 5 & 8 lbs, just enough to keep things toned, (Don't wanna look like Arnold S) I hear Marilyn Munroe used to do weights! Within a few weeks after my quit, I started a walking program. At first I could walk about 1/2 mile at a time, but pretty soon made it up to a mile. I think that helped my gains from being higher than they were. (It also dropped my blood pressure). After that, I joined an online group/food logging system (sounds kind of like barkpeople - LOL) and also logged everything I ate in a little spiral notebook that I carried around with me. I do believe portion control is the absolute key. For instance, when I cook a great-tasting dish, before I would eat seconds or even thirds because it tasted so great! Now I'm learning to eat one serving and put the rest away for another meal. Also I eat breakfast every day. I have 3 breakfasts that I rotate with: (1) oatmeal (2) plain yogurt mixed with a granola type cereal and blueberries (3) One egg and one piece of whole wheat toast. Then I have a little snack of fruit or cheese a couple of hours later. Windy, I have tried to substitute one addiction for another. When I stopped smoking I started exercising nearly every day. I try to be aware of what and why I'm eating, but have not put any food off limits. So far into my quit my weight has only flucuated by a couple of pounds (up 3 pounds last week, down 2 pounds this week). I have found that going to the gym is a nice diversion for me, I rarely have smoking thoughts there. Best of luck to you!!!!!! Here are my tips: * Watch your portion sizes. * Drink water. * Watch your calorie intake. * Make healthy choices. * Eat breakfast as it helps jumpstart your metabolism for the day. * Try cooking with olive oil as opposed to butter or lard when you can. * Choose your cooking methods wisely. Broil or bake instead of frying when you can. * Exercise! Start off with an acheivable goal that involves an enjoyable activity and go from there. Ex: Playing golf once a week. Hi Folks - Maz just posted in our calorie counting section asking for weight loss tips. I'm afraid that I was not one of those people who was able to tackle two issues at a time so my quit came first and 100 days later, I tackled the weight issue. What have other people done to prevent weight gain? All I can add is that drinking lots of water and exercising at the beginning of my quit helped to limit the amount of weight gained. Eating healthy and exercising more helped me to lose weight. I am a big eater so I have to fill up on veggies. Other people with more self-control are able to watch portion size. Congrats Waz on 16 days + and good luck with the weight loss tips.
