Hi mookie, I was terrified of gaining wieght when I quit, so the very next day after my quit I started to walk around my block before I shower to go to work, it is very early and I seem to be out all by my self, but guess what I weigh 1 lb. less today then the day I quit, Try walking it works. I bought cookbooks for healthy eating. They list calories and everything else. It helps to teach me how to cook healthy and the recipes are good. I do not feel like I am missing out on anything. I find that my ipod helps me to work out harder and to enjoy exercising more. I get into my own groove and watch out! heh! Make mini goals ... don't look at the whole elephant ... I find that concentrating on a weekly goal is a lot easier than looking at the total amount of weight I want to loose. You can do it. Start slow and work up. Any amount of activity counts, even bowling. If you like it then maybe go an extra time or two a week. Its great for your leg muscles. Walk some everyday. Even just start with 10-15 minutes, you can do it on the treadmill at the gym, if you join one. otherwise, just walk around the neighborhood. You will start to be able to walk longer and faster as you continue to build back up! Baby steps. Take it by 5 pound incriments and celebrate when you hit each goal. You'll reward yourself more that way and it will become easier to keep with it! I am with you, I have struggled all my life with obesity. The prospect of gaining 10-20 pounds is not something I am comfy with, but I will take that over cancer anyday! Starting a routine is the hardest part, just get up and do it, it will get easier! Mookie, I have gained about 15 lbs since my quit. 2 weeks ago I started to do a work out tape and started counting my calories or weight watchers points. It is not fun and I don't like doing either BUT this is what I tell myself every morning when my alarm goes off early so I can do my workout tape. IF I CAN QUIT SMOKING, I CAN AND WILL GET OUT OF THIS BED AND WORK OUT. Working out and eating right isn't NEARLY as hard as quiting smoking was. After going to my doctor today I was given the wake-up call about my weight. Since stopping 12 days ago I have gained about 6 lbs. Being 58 with a multitude of medical problems and obese to begin with, the added 6lbs did not make my visit a pleasant one. I have postponed my appt with the gym for a week now. I relly want o go but can't seem to get through the door. I do bowl at leqast 1x week but that is not hardly enough. I will have a gym buddy to go with me starting on Monday but I have such a hard time getting started. My endurance is obviously limited and I know it will only improve with repitition. I have allot of weight to lose and I feel so overwhelmed by it. I know to start out slowly and yes I do have the guidance of my doctor as well as a trainer. I feel imtimidated by all the jocks and very embarrased. Stopping smoking was the first and biggest step to take...now I need help to get started with losing the first 10lbs. Yes I have plenty of fruits and no chips, cookies, ice-cream, etc. in the house. I hate to eat breakfast and I know that is the firt change I need to make...lik just 1/2 english muffin fruit and coffee for breakfast...I know what to do but cant seem to takes those beginning steps. Commit to 10 minutes a day for a week. 10 minutes of something -- walking around your yard, lifting 2 cans of tomatoes up and down, anything. Every day 10 minutes. If you feel like it go a little longer. Don't feel like you have to do what those skinny, stinky people in the gym do. You are not in competition with them. You are working on YOU. It may take you a few visits to feel comfortable, but you will eventually get into your own "zone" and you won't even be aware that they are there. Oh, you might also try exercise dvds, so that when you don't go to the gym, you can do it at home. Try any of Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds tapes. They are excellent for people of any size or age. Mookie, You are definitely on the right track! Stop looking at the scale and put your preparation in motion. Take it step by step and one day at a time. Use all the knowledge you have learned as well as your support avenues to push forward and make the first step. Gear yourself up for Monday and don't' take no for an answer!
