How do I manage triggers when being at home is where I drink

Hi
What do people think of non alcoholic wine, a friend told me about one in particular that its quite nice, but i am afraid it will be one step back or would it be ok?
any views would really be welcome, reaching 6 weeks sober tomorrow
Thanks

Hello Longpoint, I kind of think like foxman and toxicsoul here. 2 glasses per day is not a problem but the cravings might be or become a problem, Good for you, you are recognizing at an early stage. My advice, for what it is worth: try to look into why you really want those drinks when you come home, is it work, family, etc. related? And remember, it is a lot easier to control our self, anyway for most people, in the early stage of drinking Keep posting" I would like to know how it is going for you M

Hi LongPoint, I fail to see why you think you have a problem. You only drink about 2 glasses of wine when you drink and you are able to leave it alone if it's in the house. Why do you think you have a problem?

It is true that it is a craving. For first few sips I can take it or leave it but once one glass is done the next is yummier. I am finding that I have been able to Stay away from the wine. I have kept the open bottle on the kitchen counter to prove to myself that I am bigger than it. I have not touched it.

A lot of this is habit and I need to break them

It may not be just habit for some people. They metabolize alcohol differently from others that leads to a physical craving, a need for more of the same. Its like some people can't stop consuming certain kind of food substance, the body asks more of the stuff and we end up cleaning the plate or bag of the same.

A typical pattern for me is to have a glass of wine as soon as I get home and then when that is done I pour a little bit more and then again until I have had probably 2 glasses. If I am talking on the phone with a girlfriend the consumption goes up as I pace around while talking with wine glass in my hand. A lot of this is habit and I need to break them,

Mandii and Tanne,

Welcome to the site. It is a huge positive step to join and to post so you can be proud of yourself!  I have quit drinking now for 33 days and things are getting easier.  I found it such a scary thing to consider not having alcohol a part of my life as it was a comfort I depended upon.  I also didn't fully believe that I could do it.  Take one day at a time.

Some things that have helped me were doing the activities in the toolbox and filling out the daily diary to track triggers.  Also posting on here when my resolve was shaky and getting support and advice really helped.  Meditation has helped me and exercise too.  I have tried to develop a variety of interesting non alcoholic drinks like Clamato juice (The Works), diet cranberry juice and low sodium club soda, club soda and a lime wedge are some examples. When I first quit I offered to be designated driver to a few functions so I didn't have to explain to everyone.  Now I am getting better at just saying no thanks, not tonight, just a pop would be great.  Anticipating challenges seemed to help me.

I had never discussed things with my husband and I finally did and that was a break through, a support and helped me to be accountable.  Although I had really dreaded that and it proved to be not the big deal I had built it up to be.  When we went on a two week camping trip I wasn't going to ask him not to drink,  he just decided not to and it made things so much easier for me.

I look forward to hearing how you are doing so keep us posted.  It will be good to get to know the person you can be without alcohol.  You can do it!

Thats so true, we medicated our condition with alcohol. Once we quit we need to face the emotional upheavals with our own self. Thats where AA helps. Working the steps we have a different outlook upon life, we get to manage life on life terms.

I also am afraid to be sober.  It's been so long that I don't know who that person is either.

Sian,
I am in tears, your story is exactly what i needed to read.  I have gone almost 8weeks before sober but lately i have been drinking just about everyday.  I embarrassed myself at a family gathering this past weekend and went 3days without alcohol after that but fell off AGAIN today.  I too am the WORST at home and i think im hiding it but my husband usually knows and sees a personality change that obviously i do not.  I have decided to start abstaining again all together bc even just 1 of anything makes me spiral. I am scared though we are going camping this weekend and i DO NOT want to make a fool of myself but i also am scared to be sober.  Is that wierd? I am finally being honest with myself and realized i have lost who I am without alcohol.  Any pointers how to overcome this feeling? I appreciate any input.
