Mole-like spots can appear on your skin at any age, and while many of these spots may be harmless, you should keep an eye out for signs of cancer. I myself have developed moles as I got older, I am 38. At one point I went to the doctor. I was told that they were nothing to worry about. But check for the following: €¢ A is for asymmetry. This means that if you divide the mole in half, the two parts do not match. Asymmetry may be a sign of cancer. €¢ B is for border. Irregular edges that are ragged or notched may be a suspicious sign. €¢ C is for color. Uneven or multiple colors that may vary from brown, black, and pink to red, white, and blue can signal melanoma, a type of skin cancer that can be deadly. €¢ D is for diameter. A mole may be abnormal if it is bigger than a pencil eraser. €¢ E is for elevation. A raised or uneven mole can be a sign of skin cancer. If a skin marking has any of the characteristics listed above, your doctor should evaluate it as soon as possible. Also look for other warning signs of skin cancer, including a mole that appears to be new or growing; changes in appearance or texture; itches, hurts, or feels different than usual; or is crusted, swollen, red, or irritated. If none of the above is true it doesn€™t sound as if you have anything to worry about. But a check up can give you piece of mind. Or even just getting it removed may make you feel better.

Hey Alison. I too have a few moles I am concerned about and plan to see the doctor soon about them. But, I understand your concern - I have never had a doctor NOT look at a mole when I tell them about one. I think that is a bit disturbing, so I see why you wouldn't want to jump into a surgical situation (minor as it might be) esp when it's in a major location on your body! One option you might consider, which is a happy medium between the doc who didn't look and said biopsy, and the doc who did look and said no biopsy, is to ask that you be referred to a dermatologist for evaluation. I think, if you can get an understanding doctor, and explain to them your anxiety about the procedure, they may be ok with referring you to the specialist, and that way, you would be able to have more confidence in the recommendation that the dermatologist makes, whether it's for or against the biopsy, since he/she is a specialist. If you decide not to go the dermatologist route, I would recommend the biopsy, on account of my main (and not always very helpful) mantra - better safe than sorry!! Let us know how it goes. I'm sure everything will be just fine!!

Allison: I have had several skin biopsies and 3 times they have turned out to be skin cancer. Biopsy scars will fade and you will not have to wonder about the mole. There are different type of skin cancer and several other skin conditions which change the color of your skin. Most skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma and have a cure rate of about 95%. Melanoma is the bad one but even then when caught early has about an 85% cure rate. It sounds like you are on top of this, so relax. I know this is easier said than done, but the odds are that everything will be just fine. Sharia

i don't think all moles have to biopsy or we all but at the doctor constantly. It's just the suspicious ones. My thoughts are with, Tuesday will come quickly and you can have this over with. Breast lumps are very common and very few are a concern. My mom has had several, they have turned out to be cysts that needed to be drain, that's all. Listening music really helps me!

I have developed a very faint mole in a really bad/sensitive area- women: think of the worst case scenario. I talked to one doctor about it, she didn't even look at it and said it should be biospied! :( Today I went to another doctor who DID look at it. She said it looked fine and keep your eye on it. If it's really bugs me she said I could get it biospied but it will require freezing, cutting, and a stitch, can't get area wet, etc, etc. Overall her comment was to wait. My appointment is for next week for the biospy. My husband of course thinks I'm nuts and I'm really stressing him out and that its really irresponsible for the doctor to do a biopsy without even looking at it. I'm thinking do I want to be scarred in that area for no reason, and of course I'm thinking my husband had alternative motives. HELP ME. WHAT SHOULD I DO ????? I can't think straight or like a normal person during these times and my husband has had it with me. :( Part of me want to go get it over with and then I can relax, the other part of course doesn't want to be mutilated for no reason... ADVICE???
