lt , As you rack up the days as a non-smoker you're compiling a series of firsts for yourself. First birthday , first Christmas and New Year etc. Being involved in an accident is something that can happen at any time. Whenever anything happens to me like when the car won't start or an accident I automatically reach for my top pocket where my cigarettes and lighter used to be. It's almost like an unconscious motion. Once I realise that there is nothing there I know then that I have to deal with the situation without them and do. Every situation that we go through either ordinary or extraordinary makes us just that much stronger. You're proving to yourself daily that you're stronger than you might think and reinforcing that you don't need to smoke regardless of what happens. Excellent for you for not smoking in the face of adversity. breather

Hi lemontwist.  Seems like you're having lots thrown at you to test you!  When I'm dealing with a stressful situation, I just keep asking myself, what would a cigarette do to help? Absolutely nothing, and it certainly wouldn't change what has already happened, like your accident.  You should be proud of yourself, you are doing really well.     Make sure you reward yourself in some way, it really helps.

LT,

Separate issues so separate them.

1) What went wrong with the accident? How can I put things right and how could I have done things differently?

2) All that and I didn't smoke! I'm a winner! Reward time! Massage? Fragrant bath? Chocolate cake? Whatever you consider to be treat! Treat yourself!

It can be done!

Best Wishes
Penitent

Thanks everybody for the support.

Well, it's been a difficult few weeks for sure. Today I got in a car accident, I was absolutely terrified as my car lost control on ice as I approached an intersection and I knew that I was going to rear-end the car at the stop sign in front of me. I did all that I could, and then I ran my other errands and got home. Without smoking. Of course I thought of it at least a million times but didn't.

I am trying to reward myself for getting through a difficult situation without smoking, but I find it difficult to do so when I feel so guilty about the car crash. How does everybody handle this kind of situation?

Wow, lemontwist. I just noticed on your quit meter that it's been well over a month for you. My memory of that first month is that it was very intense. I also remember feeling like I'd climbed a huge mountain once I had that under my belt. Hope you're feeling some pride and satisfaction, too. Way to go!
