Herbal suppliments....Besides vitamins... man I had a very bad run in with St.johns wort.... It mixed with the SSRI i was taking and kicked my butt... Major overdose... and about two weeks of withrawl symptoms...Please becareful with herbs... They may be affective as people mention, but they are serious drugs. Make sure to talk to your doctor.. even if youve had one or two st.johns wart multiple weeks ago before starting on prescription meds. Take good care Rob

just wanted to say, i have tried PureCalm and MindSoothe. Neither one seems to work at all for me. Maybe I'm not taking them consistently enough. Then again, the website has testimonials saying that they worked instantly. I definitely did not experience that effect. if anyone does come across a good herbal supplement, tho, I'd love to know about it. I am so not about the chemicals that drug companies like to push us so that they can get rich, and we can get dependent.

Don't ever feel like you're asking too many questions - that's what this support group is for! ;) I would have to agree with what Casey, one of the Support Specialists, had posted. Herbalists are very informed about what they do, but they are not doctors and may not have all the info about what interactions may come about when takings meds with herbs. I would talk to your doctor or nurse about your plans to take herbs. Like I mentioned before, it's better to be safe than sorry. Personally, I don't like to put anything in my body unless I know exactly what it is. Talk to an herbalist about what to take for whatever symptoms you may be suffering (they are very helpful and informative), but always check with a doctor if you are taking any kind of medicine first. A little paranoia goes a long way. ;p I'm actually doing pretty good the last two days - thanks for asking. I have been going through the 12 week program offered on this website and I started week three this last weekend. I was slacking a little bit and didn't fill out the homework that is given but I was having a hard time with anxiety on Tuesday and I sat down with the form "Challenging Your Anxious Thoughts" for the first time and made myself work it out on paper and I can't tell you what a difference it made! It was the first time in years that I actually felt in control and not controlled. I wasn't anxious at all yesterday - today, so far so good. It's like for the first time in years, I feel like there is hope in getting over this nightmare. If you haven't started the 12 week program (it's free), I strongly suggest it to you and anyone reading this post! Ok - I'll get off my soapbox now! ;) I've just felt so good since I made myself sit down and challenge my thoughts that I had to share - Crimeny, I hope it lasts!!

Hi, I just wanted to remind everyone that if you are considering taking any type of herbal/natural remedies - please be sure to first discuss them with your doctor and/or pharmacist. Casey ________________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

Vickers, Thanks for all your info. I have been drinking 2 different kind of teas. One that helps me get sleepy and one for good digestion for my tummy. I got them from a grocery store and not for one of those herbal stores. But now you made me think that maybe something in them can interact w/ my meds. Im on wellbutrin now (for only a month) BUT IM GETTING OFF OF THEM Ive never been to a herbal store but is the herbalist able to tell me if his products interact w/ my meds or do I ask my doctor? SORRY FOR ALL THESE QUESTIONS.. thanks... How have you been feeling lately??? ;)

Well, I'm not an herbalist so don't quote me, but from what I have read, the reason you need to be sure meds don't mix with herbs is because you can get too much of the chemical from either the herb or the medicine building up (especially with SSRIs) if you take both at the same time, which can be very dangerous to your health. Or the herb you are taking can lessen the effect of other meds like heart medications, birth control or whatever you are taking. So, even though it's considered natural, it is a natural chemical and needs to be treated with precautions just like any other chemical you put into your body. So, make sure you ask your doctor and / or your herbalist to make sure there won't be any problems. I'm not really sure why doctors don't suggest herbs rather than meds to tell you the truth. I know that some doctors suggest one or the other depending on the patient - my doctor does anyway. I do know that herbs are not regulated by the FDA the way meds are and that in itself may be one reason doctors don't suggest them - there's no FDA proof of herbal safety or the effects whether beneficial or not. Personally, I trust herbs more than I do meds though. Unless it's something life threatening, I go to herbs first. One thing I forgot to mention before is that you also need to consider allergies. After all, herbs are plants. A safe rule is to always do your research before you take anything - whether it's meds or herbs. :)

Thanks you guys for the answers :) One thing i dont get is i thought these herbal supplements were more natural; so how come they can interact w/ other medicines? Maybe its a dumb question but Im curious! It makes me wonder why doctors dont mention herbal supplements as an alternative to antidepressants. I never even knew that such herbs can help you calm down a lot (and w/o all those side effects from meds) ps. Vickers, your post wasnt too long; just perfect..thanks *hugz* Bianca xoxo

Hi, I have used St John's Worth, it did help with the anxiety but not the panic attacks wendy

Hey Bianca! There are actually a lot of herbs that can be used for anxiety and / or depression. Most herbalists suggest a combination of herbs to help depending on your levels of anxiety / depression. My aunt has always been borderline psychotic and she has been using Valerian for about a year now. You wouldn't believe the difference! My sister has occasional bouts of anxiety and depression and uses either St. John's Wart or Chamomile Tea. I have read about a herbal supplement called PureCalm which is found in tincture (liquid) form and is made up of several herbs that is supposed to work almost immediately. There are some others that are made up of multiple herbs called Mind Soothe and another called Bach's Remedy. I know there's more but I can't think of them right off the top of my head. Go to your search engine and type in herbs for anxiety and you will get tons of info. Herbnet.com has a section where you can ask the herbalist questions. She also lists the previous questions with her recommendations so you can find the info you need. VERY IMPORTANT - herbs are safe and as effective as most medications but you absolutely must check all warnings especially if you are taking medication for anything! If you are taking an SSRI do not take St. John's Wart! There are others that you need to stay clear from as well if you are taking SSRIs. Some herbs also effect things like birth control, heart medications, diabetes medications, etc. Talk to the herbalist where you plan on buying it from about interactions or other warnings you should be aware of or talk to your doctor. I always check the web for any and every warning out there. It's better to be safe than sorry! Sorry for sending such a long post! I hope that helps anyway!
