Fear of sickness = fear of food

You are me!!!!!!!!! I am exactly the same way you are about what you are going through!! Back in Dec my boyfriend got REALLY sick with a stomach virus and 2 days later I got it too! (We live together) and I actually threw up for the first time from a stomach virus in almost 20 years! My boyfriend had to go to work that day so I was left helpless by myself. I have been scared of food ever since. Everytime I eat dinner out I can't enjoy myself because I worry what germs are in the food... and when I hear anyone cough or sneeze, even from across the room I cover my mouth to not get their germs. I stopped eating for a while after I was sick and lost a lot of weight and then blacked out one morning in the shower... that's when I realized what I was doing to myself. I've gotten into Power bars lately, because they are packaged so that makes me feel better about germs, and they have a ton of things you need that you probably might not eat during the day if you are phobic of a lot of food like me. We are in this together!!!

Well done with your jobs!! thats great :) When I first started panicking I had the same fear and my weight plummeted. It was a vicious cycle because I would fear eating and then fear fainting or getting sick due to not eating!! First thing is that food won't make you sick unless it is bad. Things like cereal, breads, pastas, vegetables etc etc won't make you sick and any food you prepare yourself will be fine because you know you are clean! Stomach upset is a part of panic/anxiety, we all know that feeling of butterflies and nausea that everyone gets when nervous. Have you ever thrown up? It doesn't last forever and you do get through it no matter how uncomfortable it is. Remeber, challenge those negative thoughts!!! I think you should start off slowly, don't force yourself. Have a slice of toast for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch (I find breads actually calm my stomach). Drink lots of good stuff like natural juices and milks. Try to avoid things that could make you sick like junkfood and fast foods. Fries are another favorite of mine, salads I prepare and vegetables. Once you get into an eating cycle you will become more adventurous and get back into your meats and eating out etc. Hang in there and never be afriad to talk to your GP or cousellor/psych about your fears!!

Hiya, Well it's been a while since i've visited as i managed to get everything under control. I've managed to get a job and have been having more interviews to move on to full time work.. But while things have been going well i've found myself in a situation... I have an uncontrolable fear of sickness, and more precisely throwing up! Now a few people i know have come down with a stomach bug, and it's triggered by fears. But the problem i have is... to over come my fear of sickness i'm avoiding food. I really dont mean to do it. I wouldn't go out of my way not to eat or anything, but i seem to not be able to stop myself!! I look at food and the only thought that comes to my mind is "if u eat that you're gonna throw up!" and then i panic!!! I'm so worried of developing a fear of food, and getting very ill! In some way i appear to have convinced myself that if i dont eat, then i wont get sick! Does anyone relate?! Sarah xx
