Afraid of My Thoughts

Terry, I was soooo relieved in a way to read your post. I too have problems with weird "existential" type questions when I get anxious. I also have obsessive thoughts/fears like "what if I can't handle it", "what if I hurt myself to make it stop", etc. Neil described it perfectly as a "negative debating society"! The minute I feel anxious ALL my thoughts and observations turn negative, even though in the lulls where I am not anxious I do not think like this AT ALL! I wrote index cards to myself when I was feeling well stating positive thoughts like "Rachele you don't think this when you are not anxious", "Rachele it will not escalate if you don't give in to the thoughts". I also repeat these things to myself, just reminding myself that these are ONLY THOUGHTS, that it will pass. Sometimes it is very, very difficult but I keep at it till I get calmed down. I hope you feel better throughout the day, and that you can enjoy some of the weekend. Rachele

Urnotme is absolutely right. When I feel panic coming in I "change gears" and do something different to take my mind off of it. One thing I like to do lately is log on to the site and read and respond to posts. That helps a lot.

I have not been here for a while but I want you to know that you can help control panic by shifting what you are doing at the moment. You can take a cold drink of water, sing a song that you like, listen to a song on the radio. You can even do all three. The idea is to give your mind something else to focus on instead of the panic. When you do this you will feel more in control.

Hello Terry, you are not alone thats for starters.I have found that because of this illness I tend to get very introspective, and I let my thoughts rule me, it's like a very negative debating society inside my head.I also think one of the best things to do is to talk to someone when you feel like this, it really does help to bounce your thoughts of another human being.Otherwise its the same old stuff going round and round like a stuck record with only your point of view obsessing about it.Someone else can talk things through with a different perspective and this can be like a breath of fresh air. Loneliness and isolation can play tricks on the mind, try and get a bit busy. Good luck, this too shall pass...Neil.

I'm having a tough afternoon, I keep having these really scary thoughts. "What if everything only gets worse, even after death" "What if you can't handle it" ..."What are you doing here?" ... I feel very seperated from reality and frightened. I feel like I'm watching a movie of myself. Need some support :( ...thanks for reading.
