alcohol exacerbating panic?

for 20 år siden 0 71 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I just don't drink now that I have panic attacks. It isn't worth it. I get woken up in the middle of the night with severe panic and it tends to last throughout the next day or two. Not worth it. I can't say that enough. For social drinking situations where I'm not with my close friends, I just tell people the truth. I'm on medication that interacts with alcohol. Let them think what they like. To get help going to sleep, I use my granma's old hot milk trick. A mugful of hot milk with a teaspoon of honey. It may sound gross to some, but within 20 minutes, I'm sleepin' like a baby. Sarah :)

I drink pretty much (at least to normal standards), then again it's a common "cultural thing" here in Finland. But I must admit, I do tend to have some beers in order to be able to sleep (I have sleeping pills, but not enough of 'em). Anyway, I know alot about hangovers, and I can tell you that it's 100% certain that hangovers make panic disorder ALOT worse. At least for me, but as it's the "official" version of the matter, I can only concur and say this: I've got some pills (soothing ones, don't know the correct English word for them) to relax me, and I never use them, unless I'm very hung over and need to go outside and do something other than buy food and casual stuff like that. So yea, hangovers+panic=HELL.

I had to get treatment to stop drinking because the only thing that would make me feel better after a night on the booze was...another drink. It definitely made my anxiety worse and propelled me to alcohol dependency,so I have stopped drinking altogether, and alot of the weird thinking / anxiety was CAUSED by the alcohol in the first place, it is a very subtle trap. I know without doubt that: alcohol + anxiety disorder =BAD NEWS. Best wishes Neil.

Saire, I know for a fact that alcohol worsens my anxiety the next day. In fact I have totally given up drinking alcohol. Sammi

Hi Saire--- In answer to your question about alcohol and anxiety. I have had anxiety/panic disorder since 1985 and have also been on Xanax since then. I don't feel I have self-medicated myself, but I do enjoy social drinking. I have found that the next day after consuming alcohol seems to be intensified with anxiety so I have chosen not to drink any longer. Good luck, Donna

Hi saire, Please be very cautious with mixing alcohol and dealing with anxiety. I would encourage to talk with your doctor about this issue. Casey ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

Hi, I'm Saire, new here. I also posted this question in the new-person area.... But perhaps here is a better place.... I read somewhere in these forums that drinking alcohol can make your anxiety the next day bad/worse. Does anyone know anything about that? Is this definitely true or just a theory? Of course I'm asking because I tend to self-medicate at night sometimes with alcohol (don't want to use up that xanax before I'm allowed to get a refill! and I have had terrible insomnia since I was a child -- of course now it's been unbearable).... Just wondering if it's actually making me worse after it makes me "better."
