Shallow Breathing & Yawning

Hi Trish & Lydia, Trish thanks for the info, I thought it might be considered air hunger but wasn't sure. Sometimes it's a vicious cycle with me: I'll yawn until I get a deep breath then as soon as I do I start yawning to try & catch another deep breath. When I get like that I would say only about 1 in 10 yawns feels productive. Like I get the air that I need. Weird huh?? Lydia, I'm glad that it makes you feel better talking about it & knowing that youre not alone, it does with me as well. I haven't really noticed a feeling in my torso when this is going on but I'm so occupied with my breathing that I barely notice anything. What were you referring to about a search with 365 days back on breathing?? Thanks, Chanda

The breathing yet not feeling that gets enough air to capacity with the yawn effect is what doctor's refer to as "air hunger". I used to get it alot, kept on yawning till finally one would feel as I finally got enough in my lungs. All they kept telling me is it is the subtle hyperventilation syndrome we have, and just do the abdominal breathing techiques. Sometimes its hard.

Chanda, Yes it seems that I feel that I need to yawn to get a good breathe and most of the time it makes me feel better. Girl it is amazing but on my lunch hour I felt so good walking around and I kept thinking it happens to you so I am ok and I was able to breathe fine. How do you feel inside around your upper torso when you have that feeling? Oh do a search with 365 days back on breathing I came up with some helpful info. Have a wonderful weekend. Lydia

Hi Lydia, I get "shortness of breath" (as I call it) at any given time. Not usually on a daily basis, but it doesn't seem to matter if I'm anxious or not. I don't think that I ever really feel "relaxed" but even when I'm comfortable this happens. In fact, I would say that the majority of the time when it happens I'M NOT really anxious but the shortness of breath sometimes CAUSES the anxiety. In some cases tho, this happens when I'm already anxious & on the verge of an attack & this only makes it worse! Do you also feel like the only way you can get a deep breath is by yawning?? Also does it always work?? Like I said before even when I yawn I dont always get the deep breath that I'm trying to get & that is sometimes when I start to panic. Chanda

Chanda, How do you feel otherwise like do you have a anxious feeling as well? I am answering you but how I can help makes me wonder. I have not mastered it myself yet. I decided to start writing down how I feel. During these times do you feel that something radically is wrong. My husband says I can not relax, I can not remember but did you prviously write that it happens at all times either at rest or busy? Lydia

Thanks gr8fl, I'll definately check out the cd's!! Actually I have tried the breathing to a count but everytime I just end up yawning to catch my breath.I can NEVER get a deep breath through my nose!! Hi LYDIA, When I first found this site it was calming to me also. It is very helpful to know that other people have the same issues & that we are not alone. Now about this breathing thing.......I am the same way, if I try to concentrate on my breathing (or even think about it) I start to have a hard time. There is really no exact time that this happens to me either. But sometimes it feels like the only way I can get "a full, deep breath of air" is if I yawn. Sometimes that wont even help & I'll almost yawn constantly until I catch a breath. (several times) My husband now recognizes yawning as my first sign of an attack but I have tried all kinds of breathing exercises but I cannot seem to master any of them. Please write back if you get a chance. Thanks!! Chanda

cdg - I would recommend listening to meditative music cd's. The best I've discovered are by Dr Jeffrey Thompson. They truly help you to relax and focus on what you choose to including your breathing. Also, try rhythmic breathing - breathing in while mentally counting one...two...three...four. Then exhale counting the same beat. Good luck to you.

Is there anyone out there has mastered the shallow breathing. All my life I can not think about breathing or I have a hard time. Oh well goes back to if I stay really busy then I do not have a problem my husband says that I can not relax. I stayed away from support groups because I thought if I think about my problems it would get worse but just this short time seeing other people with the same symptoms makes me realize that I may be ok. In fact I have calmed down alot. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

You are the first person I know who has the same symptoms as myself. please let me know when you get them, how often? Mine comes and goes sometimes I think it is coffee but then there are days I do not have these feelings. Sometimes I am just sitting and it happens and then sometimes it happens when I have walked upstairs but then other times it doesn't it drives me bananas.

Chanda, Back up a bit and try to relax yourself completely. Reading, warm baths, soothing music etc. Once your body is relaxed it may be easier to work on your breathing techniques. Try pilates and yoga. Directly at the gym in exercise or indirectly through books. These will take you through breathing techniques step by step. Hope this helps, Josie
