Mercy,
My key to weight loss is learning what I'm willing to live with and what I'm not willing to live without. If you go on a radical diet fit only for a rabbit (carrots, celery, lettuce, etc...), then you're not only going to have that hershey bar (or whatever it is you don't want to do without), but you're going to have TEN to make up for the ones you didn't have while on the diet!
Last time I dieted, I decided that I couldn't live without my Mt. Dew. Now, before that time, I was drinking 3 or 4 20-oz Mt. Dews a day! So, I decided that I would have ONE 12-oz Mt. Dew a day. That was my splurge of the day. I felt like if I gave that up, then I'd surely cave.
This time, I didn't plan to take it out of my diet... it just took itself out naturally. About 2 weeks ago, I thought about the fact that I hadn't had a Mt. Dew in about 2 weeks (or more) and decided I'd give myself one. I took 2 sips, realized that I didn't REALLY want or need it, and ended up wasting the rest of it. I realized that I CAN live without it afterall... but I didn't deny myself my Mt. Dew... I just sort of let it fall out of my diet naturally and replaced it with healthier drinks.
This time, my splurge is cheese and olives (not necessarily together). In my salads, soups, sandwiches, etc... I allow myself to have a moderate amount of olives and/or cheese, even though both of these are high fat/high calorie. I find that I actually lose MORE weight than I would if I took them completely out because I don't feel like I'm denying myself. The key to dieting is NOT feeling like you "can't" have something you want. Otherwise, you'll rebel against yourself and end up going overboard.
So, the key is moderation. Can you have a Hershey's bar every once in a while? Sure. Can you have one every day? Probably not a good idea. But don't deny yourself them. Find healthy alternatives for your hershey's bars and allow yourself to have one every once in a while. Otherwise, the diet won't last and you'll be back up to your old caloric intake (or higher) in no time at all. So, enjoy your Hershey's... and maybe you'll find after a while, that you really DON'T want them as much afterall.
