Question about losing weight

Banana, You may want to consider consulting your doctor regarding your recent weight gain. He/she is the best authority to distinguish whether or not a change in medication is in order due to your quit. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Is this the reason that I've gained 25 pounds in 3 short months? I had my bloodwork back in December 2006 & everything was perfect...should I have it re-tested? I had half my thyroid removed in 2001 & was diagnosed with cancer. After the surgery, the remaining thyroid kind of went into over drive & it took a long time to get it to the right balance....I have been considered cured since 2005. I exercise on the treadmill for a minimum of 25 minutes every other day (sometimes daily, if I have the time) & I am vegan...shaking my head in disbelief. I CANNOT continue to gain. My whole body hurts, even my skin feels like it's going to bust open. And the emotions of now being over-weight is horrible. I have never been over-weight in my life....I HATE IT I am so close to 100 day milestone & all I keep thinking of, is if I have a cigarette, I'll lose weight. I am damn proud of this quit & I don't want to blow it. We take the same med though with different names. To start with Im on Eutirox 100 mg, the dosage might be changed after my next blood test. The funny thing is that while smoking I had almost no thyroid deficiency symptom! Only after the quit Ive gained a couple of kilos, often felt tired and had concentration problems. I suppose this is going to be another journey as common as quitting (so many people in Europe are now affected by hypothyroidism-caused by Chernobyl accident?)! Talk to you soon :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 138 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 690 Amount Saved: $138.00 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 6 Mins: 45 Seconds: 27

Hi Mitri, I'm taking meds for hypo, I'm on thyrax for that. I would love to talk on instant messenger but I can't add a contact or see what is going on. I will contact you tomorrow if this IM is working better. Thanks for the help so far. Duch, are you on hyper or hypothyroidism med? Not long after my quit, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and am taking thyroid hormone replacement med. So far I have no restriction nor on what to eat neither on taking any other medicine. How about talking through the instant messenger? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 138 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 690 Amount Saved: $138.00 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 5 Mins: 57 Seconds: 55

Dutch, It will depend on how stable your thyroid is and when you were diagnosed. If you were diagnosed and medicated for hyperthyroidism as a smoker, you may need to have your medication adjusted now that you've quit. Both hyperthyroidism and smoking speed up your metabolism. If you are being treated with medication and have quit smoking, both slow down your metabolism. If your doctor assures you your metabolism rate is where it should be then a change in current diet and level of physical activity should warrant positive results. At your next visit with your doctor, you may want to take advantage and have him/her refer you to a dietician to help you come up with a plan that will work best taking into account your medical history. Hope this helps. Danielle - Bilingual Support Specialist

If you have Thyroid disease than you should check with your Doctor, because thyroid medications adjust the metabolism. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 107 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,675 Amount Saved: $1,128.85 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 3 Mins: 36 Seconds: 55

Hello Quitters, Does anyone of you know if a person (me) with a thyroidproblem can lose weight with the weight watchers program. I gained some weight after my quit and I want to lose some. I have never tried the weight watchers diet because that thyroidproblem gives me a hard time. Some people tell me I eat not enough and maybe they are right. Suggestions anyone? Thanks for the help :)) P.S. If anyone will have it, I give it away for free. Just come over to The Netherlands and you'll get it :)) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 445 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,350 Amount Saved: 1,312.75 Life Gained: Days: 62 Hrs: 19 Mins: 48 Seconds: 51
