Hi nurseboy I too think that you have some stresser in your life, even though you might not be aware of it. Can i ask, do you enjoy your work. I dont know what kind of a nurse you are, in my country we have different nurses that do different things. some work with the elderly, some work with the terminally ill, etc etc. Reason i ask is. I worked in the care industry for many years, old people and disabled children were my field. I was fine with the old dears, but with the kids, i did tend to get too emotionaly involved, which gave me many a tearfull night. I eventually realised that i wasnt able to detach myself from the kids sufferings, and it did effect my health. Just a thought. Theres got to be something i reckon, thats doing this to you. Sounds to me like you need a break (vacation). Best wishes Mudslinger uk

so, instead of trying ti figure out the thoughts...change your thoughts...run, walk, fish, kisten to music...?

Hi nurseboy...most of what I read says that panic attacks are fairly short in duration (15 minutes to 1 hour). I used to think that my problem wasn't panic, because I could run days of feeling high anxiety (with physical symptoms). I understand now that generalized anxiety does sometimes run longer (someone explained them as being anxiety attacks - which are extended periods of heightened anxiety). In another post, you mentioned that you feel your "baseline" is gone (i.e. you don't know what feels normal anymore)...I've had this in the past, but not as often anymore. When I go through a long period of anxiety, my perspective changes...and I lose track of my own "baseline". I found that using distraction techniques helped me to think less about anxiety-causing things. I keep reminding myself that I don't need to chase thoughts that cause anxiety. After time, as your anxiety drops you'll find yourself thinking less about anxiety-causing unanswerables.

Hi nurseboy...I often have the same feelings. It's always nice to say "I'm anxious because of this"...but for me, it doesn't always work that way. Sometimes, I'm anxious for no reason. From previous experiences, as my stress level and anxiety starts to drop overall, the feelings are less common. When I do get them, however, they feel like a sense of impending doom (almost like an intense form of anxiety that is very difficult to reason with..when I'm in the middle of it, positive self-talk and relaxation just don't seem to work). When I'm in "one of those stages" everything I look at and see is anxiety producing. The state of the world, the health of my children, my own ability to cope, the severity of my anxiety problem, my self confidence, etc. - everything seems to be far worse than it really is (from reading the Panic Program, I can label some of the thoughts - the most common being all or nothing thinking and generalization).

thanks for all of your input. chimpmaster, i am strong but sooo frustrated as i cannot find a reason for these feelings and i have this NEED TO KNOW. when my ocd acts up and i think of perturbing homosexual thoughts or blasphemy...i can say "that is where the anxiety is coming from". but recently, just the fear without the beer (the thoughts). red face...i have waited for the subconscious to appear and present to me my fear...it just hasn't come.

Nurseboy, are you hiding something from yourself? There must be a cause, you just have to find out what it is....maybe a professional has to help you find out what it is....Your subconscious seems to be hiding something...that is just my intuition talking. Maybe I'm wrong. Ask yourself all the questions on the Panic Program to the left, and you might come up with something....take care...

Nurseboy, remember that only you can lift yourself out of this feeling! I can see in your posts you are someone with a lot of strength, especially with your work as a nurse. I dont know what else to say. I can relate to your feeling. Thankfully I dont feel like that anymore, but I did for quite a while. I cant help but think that if you have OCD the solution for you will be the same - learnt positive responses. Distraction techniques and positive reassurance. Hope you feel better soon...
