Dear Nicotine -
I've been told that in order to move forward, after the break-up of a long-term relationship, one needs closure. So, I'm writing this letter to officially say good-bye to you.
It's hard to break-up after an almost 20 year relationship - we've been through so much together. And, our relationship wasn't all negative - you kept me company while I stood outside on rainy and freezing days, you started every morning and ended every night with me, you helped me to avoid my feelings/emotions, you accompanied me on every car ride - leaving a permanent reminder of your presence, you trained my bowels to respond to you (and only you...still...), you enabled me to give my money to the wonderful tobacco companies, and you helped me to have colds that lasted 4+ weeks. I now have your mark tatooed on my body (aka the wrinkles around my lips from sucking in your smoke) - so don't worry, I'll never forget you.
Despite these fond memories, I've moved on. I'm learning how to walk down the street, finish a meal, drive a car, have a drink, and talk on the phone without you. Sure I've had to make major life changes - like getting use to smelling nice, having clean & shiny hair, having glowing skin, having the yellow fade from my teeth, etc. But in time, I'll get use to it. Just like I'll have to find a way to get use to having more money in my pocket - I'll cope.
You gave me an ultimatum - I had to pick either you or my life. It was a hard decision, and I carefully weighed the pros and cons. But, I'm sorry, I did not choose you - I chose to live.
So, let this letter serve as our final communication as I will never ever let you back into my life.
Sincerely,
Changing
