Good advice, Trish! Also 53runner, I wanted to leave you with one of my favorite affirmations: At the root of our need to control, we find FEAR. It may be fear of the unknown. Fear of not coping. Fear of loss. Or possibly even fear of looking stupid. And as our efforts to control other people and events invariably fail, ***our fear increases.*** Trust, on the other hand, is a quality of the soul. While control is a tool of the mind, trust and faith are aspects of the heart. Trust comes with the deep knowing that we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. When we trust enough in life ****to give up our need to control,*** we can relax and open to the flow of energy in our lives. This brings peace of mind.

53runner Course I'm no therapist, but it seems to me, that your worry about what is going to happen when you get to school, is 1) the fear of the unknown 2)the fact that you can't control what will happen The fear part is enough to let our imaginations run wild, because it tends to imagine the worst possible But then you have to ask yourself, if the worst ever really happens. What would be the worst? And what, if ANYTHING, can YOU do, to prevent ANYTHING from happening? Focus on reacting to WHAT ACTUALLY happens and not what MIGHT happen. Secondly, you can't control what happens, you can ONLY control HOW you respond. DON'T start preprogramming yourself with negatives.... Think about being creative and how, despite your fear, that you will handle each situation as best you can. If you can't KNOW what will happen, how can you predict ahead of time, how you will think/feel about it? Or how you should react, BEFORE anything happens.I don't know if that helps, but it just seems to me you are puting the cart before the horse. You can't KNOW the future, even 5 min from now, so HOW can you control it? Simple... You can't. ;)

53runner, In all honesty being a mother to two kids now ages 13 and 18, and aunt to many more, the very students you teach are experiencing their own anxieties, you could probably even pick out the ones you suspect. Be positive in knowing it affects alot of people, different ages, these students most likely do not even know you have anxiety, yet they themselves are trying to find a right clique to fit in, its a stressful time for kids at that age. Also having themselves get up in front to give a presentation, or being called on for an answer causes alot of stress for a nervous child. Positive reinforcement to the kids you suspect are more timid, arent the most popular, they will gain more self esteem, and become more positive to you. Positive outlooks feed off one another, and the more you see this happening the more you feel better and less anxiety you will feel. Trish

Dear 53runnner, My best suggestion would be to take deep breaths and attempt positive thinking before going into the classroom. Are you under care of a Doctor? It is important that they know exactly how you have been feeling. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing. Susanne

I am looking for advise on ways to be more positive with my students. My anxiety seems to get in the way with my students who are 10 years old. I worry about going to school and what is going tohappen. Are their any teachers out their who experience the same thing?
