i need some advice today!

I hear ya Nick, I am very VERY tired of fighting it too, but what choice is there?! I went through the whole suicidal phase, if thats the only option left then I'd rather just keep on fighting but as you obviously know it's very hard, I'm just trying to draw on what I've learnt over the years and from what I'm finding out from the people here and hopefully I can give back advice based on my experiences or just share and vent with others who understand.

we just keep fighting and thats it we dont have a choice, we want the good days we want the panic free days and to do that we have to constantly stay up on our techniques to achive that. those of us who have suffered through this before know that it will pass it will not last forever, we are not crazy, we are just predisposed to a drop in our seratonin level which produces more panic and anxiety than the average person. at least thats what ive been taught. i also give my advice better than i take it but thats a whole other thing. we just want to live normal and when we are in the throws of panic we want out and to get out we need a good support network, we need the breathing exercises and the exposure work and sometimes we need the meds. and believe me im not a fan of the meds. either thats probably why im in the state i am, but im working it out im trying to get back on track and once again i am fighting this thing. im sick of fighting it but i have to, its a part of me i might not like it but its been a part of me for 23years, and it keeps me fighting .

Nurseboy, I can relate to what you said about what your counsellor's questions etc are. I too was in therapy for awhile, my first counsellor was awesome but since moving I've found what I consider to be some real loonies who shouldn't be practicing! One asked if my mother was anxious while pregnant with me as that could be why I'm pre-disposed to anxiety! My question to her was 'what good is it going to do me in knowing that?!' That was 25 years ago, if my mum was anxious (which she wasn't while pregnant btw) then what is knowing that going to do, miraculously make the panic and anxiety go away - I don't think so! I canned counselling and dont' take meds, it works better for me that way otherwise I'd end up hating my family (plus I react severly to pretty much all kinds of meds) - although I know this isn't a suitable way of dealing with it for everyone, we all cope with this in our own way. I find that it comes in waves, I get to a point where Im cruising along fine almost living a normal life then out of the blue the panic comes back then I have to go through the horrible stage of facing and accepting the panic, putting myself in unpleasant situations as I find this is the only way I can get to the next level. I come home thinking, yeah I went in that supermarket today, tommorrow I'm going to go two isles further and so on, and if I fail, well as the saying goes, it is better to have tried and failed than to have not tried at all. I personally think its something that will always be there and its learning the coping mechanisms such as breathing, exposure and postive thought repititions that will get me through the relapses, maybe some of you also find this a way of dealing with it all? BTW, I've heard that some specialists think panic disorder is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain has anyone else heard of this???

It's both. It's not so black and white, as it is gray. The fighting comes with resisting avoiding doing things you need to do, and the accpetance comes with realizing that when you do those things, it may make you uncomfortable. I doubt that it has so much to do with either bravery or intelligence. Sometimes, it's sheer will.

so, how are we gonna beat this? we are obviously educated and brave. I have done a lot of reading on panic, ocd, blah blah blah, and some research says to fight the panic and never give up...my shrink and some books say to not fight it and let it exist with you. which is it?

It seeing the shrink wasn't so outrageously expensive...i would find the questions he asks amusing. How is your job? His your life? How is your family? How was your childhood? I have told hime so many times THAT THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT STUFF. If my life was perfest or in shambles...my panic is THE SAME! He wants me to try paxil cr instead of the paxil that i have been on for years. the controlled release is supposed to be 'better'. My brother has OCD and we feel the same - when the meds are working, WE ARE FINE.When the meds aren't working, you could counsel us day and nite and we would still feel like ****! wHERE YA FROM NICK?

nurseboy you and i are running the same pattern here. i woke up this morning in a pretty good state of anxiety, not full blown panic but good anxiety. i layed in bed with my girlfriend getting ready for work and just went through all these questions in my mind, all the ones you are probably going through, work is awesome, girlfriend is amazing, house is good, family is the best all of these i go through and still i doubt. i really ****es me off, but i layed there and just concentrated on my breathing and just went over all these questions in my mind and disproved all the doubts. it helped alot i was able to get back to sleep for a couple more hours. when i woke up the anxiety was back a little but i just got on the computer and started this post. i am on a floating dose of klonipin(.5mg) as well but that is my last resort, it knocks out the panic really fast especially if you let it dissolve under your tongue but it gets me pretty groggy(sp?). I just have to keep on, im on regular meds again and just waiting for this thing to pass, and yours will too just give it time man just give it time. n

I saw my psych yesterday and he put me on lose does klonopin and it helped a lot last night but i keep waking up feeling very nervous like i was going to the electric chair. i have a great job. i only work 3 twelve hours shifts a week, i have a great wife and son and basically everything i want and need. EXCEPT PEACE OF MIND! I am done with my education, i make decent money...why do i wake up so worried? Any advice? I tried the exposure stuff but i don't have identifiable thoughts that bother me..i just fel nervous and flighty! I am so afraid i am going insane! I don't want to do anything anymore because everything seems such a hassle anymore. please any advice?
