Thanks for the replies guys. I do feel a bit better about it cause my parents are not worried at all and they have black stuff too. I still am sure it's unhealthy but there's nothing I can do about it, right. I 've just come off a really great anxiety chat site-too bad we don't have that here... something for the administrators to think about.... Well, here's to a new week-hopefully a better one than the last (not that it was too bad). Hope you all had a good weekend. Sarah

Sarah, I don't blame you for being paranoid, that's the kinda paranoias I have all the time. Esspecialy about it effecting my brain! Different thing to be paranoid about every day, lol! I just wanted to let you know that I'm a heavy smoker and my mucus is nearly always a dark blacky colour. Same with my parents mucus, and any other smokers I know. It's not necessarily a healthy thing by any strech! But at the same time it's a very common effect of smoke exposure. I also think you should see a doctor about it, just to be on the safe side. In reality I think you'll nothing to worry about. Hope I've helped you to calm down a bit. I've worried about black mucus before too!

Hi Sarah, I'm responding to your candle post. I guess this may sound obvious, but I'd think you wouldn't want to burn those candles again! I've never heard of that happening with candles but in college I used to go dancing a lot in small smoky bars and would blow my nose and have it come out black, so it's probably not a good thing to burn those things without adequate ventilation. As far as worrying what you inhaled, you can think of it as "did other people in the house feel 'poisoned' by the candles?" If not, then - and I know this is easier said than done - you probably don't have anything to worry about. But as far as worrying about inhaling other things in the past, I can't say, but I'm assuming that you've not spent most of your life working in a coal mine, being exposed daily to asbestos, or spent your youth sniffing model glue or anything like that. I don't have OCD, but I do worry when I'm exposed to weird smells/fumes - the other day at work we had a minor electrical fire that permeated the office and I was getting worried about it, but then I kind of noticed that the people who were a lot closer to it than I were going about there business not bothered at all - that made me relax. Well, I hoped that I helped a little bit, or at least distracted you a bit whilst I babbled on. :)

Hi Sarah, If you continue to cough up the "black stuff" please go and see your doctor. Even though it may be from the candles, it is important to be safe when it comes to your health. While you are at your doctors ask him/her about the feelings you are having. Your doctor knows your history and the two of you can get everything out in the open. Please continue to discuss your thoughts and concerns here in our support group. It is always good to talk about your feelings and hopefully you can get some of your questions answered. Take care Sarah and we will be looking forward to your next post :) Melanie

While my acute panic attacks have eased off, I'm starting to get overcome by my old friend OCD. Last night we used these oil burning candles. We noticed later that evening that the toilet seats were kind of black. Then I noticed I had black stuff all up my nose and I was spitting up black gunk (sorry to be so graphic). We figured out it must have come from the candles- I had noticed earlier that black smoke seemed to be coming from the candles but didn't say anything because I am always told I am so paranoid. This morning I am still spitting up the black stuff and am sooooo worried about the effects of inhaling that stuff (it was a parrafin lamp oil). I feel like it has affected my brain and I feel weird and then I think about the long-term effects and on and on and on. I've even had all the windows open to get the last of any of the smoke out and it's sub-zero weather here! Then I start obsessing about everything I've done in the past and all the other terrible things I've inhaled. I can't seem to get away from this. I always try to leave what has happened in the past where it belongs and try to focus on the future which I may have some control over. But these stupid thoughts keep coming up...and then the guilt. I feel so poisoned. Any thoughts...?
