Hi Suzanne, I've been to my family doctor many times and have had a chest x-ray and an electocardiogram but for some reason I still think there is something wrong with my heart or my lungs and I hear that's common too.

Hello Rhonddaro, Shortness of breath is a common side effect of a panic attack. I would still recommend that you see your family Doctor about the difficulty breathing. It is important that they know exactly how you have been feeling. Please keep us posted. Susanne

I've been diagnosed with panic disorder as well as generalized anxiety and I have that breathing problem almost every day is that normal? Do any of you have it like that?

It's no wonder this is a hard syndrome to treat! the symptoms are similar, but they occur under such different circumstances! Seems like I am yawning all the time trying to get my lungs to feel full.I almost look forward to getting a cold each winter because, for some reason, it always breaks the pattern of anxiety attacks for a few weeks. At least it encourages me that the cycle can be broken. I use "square breathing", but it only works sometimes. I need to develop several techniques that work, so if one fails I have a backup.

Hey same here with the asthma thing I was on steriods for four years with what they thought was asthma turned out to be anxiety. I have been off all the drugs i thought i needed to breathe now over a year but i am not on one anxiety medication because i am so affraid to take them. Especially xanax or atavan because they are known to cause respitory suppression. The worst thing I fear is getting sick like a cold with chest congestion, my anxiety is the worst then. Last night I had a horible attack while sleeping. I woke up with my heart racing after having a dream that was sick. I think this was because all last night I had to keep yawning to get air I thought forsure I was getting sick or something. Anyway just want to say I get the same thing and it stinks!

WOW!! Someone describing something only I thought I had. It was actually one of my very first symptoms that I can recall along with having difficulty swallowing. And a name to it finally too..... Learn something new every day. Thank you for the info. For awhile before being diagnosed with anxiety they thought it was asthma with me. One dr even deemed it "anxiety asthma"

I do that too. I can't help it. I feel like the only way to get enough air is to yawn...and when I do, I push it back out without even getting any because I breathe backwards when I panic. When I was like 12-13 I always felt like I couldn't breathe. That's what I always did. Now, I'm starting to again.

Hi Caroline, Welcome! The medical term for what your experiencing is called dyspnea. Layman terms for us is "air hunger". It is anxiety induced, I experienced this also, yawning to fill my lungs, I felt like I was getting air, but not quite enough air. I found that doing the abodominal breathing exercises help offset this symptom. Trish

HI, I'm new here- my disorder started around 12 yrs. of age. I can remember not being able to breathe during swim practice. Now at 30, I've finaly started looking into a possible disorder/treatment. I didn't realize this was not normal. I feel this way 1ce/2x a month to going weeks w/o one. They also effect me up til I can fall asleep, and resume as soon as I wake up. My therapist(of 3 months) is doing Eye movement desensitisation rehab. not sure if it's working, also started effexor- but right now having just as bad an attack as ever. Feels like someone sitting on my chest, I have a lump in my throat, I have to swallow hard, I take huge gulps of air-constantly yawning hard, sometimes til my lungs burn, and my face tingles. When I yawn, I need total concentration-no visual - sound distractions. I have to sit up in bed to breath. Everyone that knows me has seen this happen, at first thinking I'm tired or bored. If any of you have been succesfully treated- please respond. It has been so extremely aggravating- and I've just started researching. sorry for the long post- spelling errors- please respond with any info -thanks-Caroline
