Still walking . . .

Thanks! I also read that I shouldn't walk w/ weights but dh insisted that I do so. (Rolling eyes) Thanks for the info, I'm going to check out that site. Yeah, the pain in my legs is horrible when I first start walking and I know that A)I'm not stretching properly and B)I start off at a very brisk pace. T. This is the end of week 3 of my fitness era. I have not seen any significant weightloss so I'm going to really revise my diet, since I'm obviously doing the exercise part. I got a new ipod and loaded it up w/ great tunes to keep me moving. I'm getting a new jogging stroller, courtesy of my mom, and am thinking of getting a watch that will monitor my heart rate so that I can stay at a good heart rate for weightloss. I need to save the $$ for it, though so it may be a little while longer before I can get it. So, here's what I'm doing. For those of you that think that you can't start exercising, I'm here to tell you that's not true! I never thought I would enjoy doing this! Monday - no workout Tuesday - 3 miles at White Rock Lake, 10 crunches. Wednesday - 3 miles at track. I have not been able to take my weights since I'm pushing a stroller. Walking w/ the stroller is a lot harder! 1.5 miles w/ stroller. T. Thursday - No walking today in the morning - crunches and weights. 2 miles at track in the evening pushing stroller. My legs were really cramping up. I really need to stretch before I walk. T. Friday - 3 miles (1.5 w/ weights) - I've noticed that the 1st mile is excrutiating and that my calves and shins are cramping up. The last mile is the easiest and I feel like I could keep going. Saturday - 3 miles at track. 1st mile is next to impossible, last mile is easy. How can that be? I think I may need to stretch longer. Sunday - No walk in AM. Evening - 3 miles at track. Still no weight loss. Diet will have to be revised. Tex you are doing fantastic!! Yay TxsT Yay on 60 days!! WooHoo Loving the walking threads. I've pushed my 4 km walk up to 6 km and I vary between the two, but I don't walk every day. I'm glad you said that it's harder when you're pushing the pram - it makes me feel more virtuous pushing mine. I'm with you on the diet revision! lol Now that I've hit the 2 month mark I'm having a mini-detox (fruit and veg) for a few days. That will jump start the weight loss nicely. I found that the weight gain stopped after about 6 weeks after stopping smoking. Cheers alison :) Kick the Herb to the Kerb My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 62 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,865 Amount Saved: $775 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 19 Mins: 33 Seconds: 40

You MUST stretch before you walk. You also must warm up. Shin splints and cramps come from not doing those things and also from walking too fast too soon. There's a very good walking site -- i think it's walking connection dot com. They have great resources there and a good forum. Also, they don't advise that you walk with weights...it can throw off your forum and possibly cause an injury. Sounds like you are doing great...be patient! TX, Your determination and energy is outstanding. Check with your doctor to help you come up with an eating plan that is right for you. You are doing fantastic in your quit, so don't look at the scale, look at how you feel! Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
