Hi, I have not smoked for just over a week now, but on weighing myself this morning I noticed that I have gained 6lbs since I quit! Now is this a bit of an excessive weight gain or what? Did anyone else find they piled on this much weight when they first quit? I haven't really been eating anymore, and am not constipated really due to the fact I eat a lot of things with fibre (nuts / seeds etc). I am aware that metabolism changes when you give up, but do you think it will correct itself out and the weight will come back off? Any advice gratefully received! I haven't had to deal with the weight gain yet, but I am a stong advocate in leading a healthy lifestyle. It pains me when I see people use the word diet. There are so many variations of diets out there that aren't good for people, but in our society, it seems everyone has consumed themselves (at one point or another) on dieting. Please understand that I am not a doctor, or nutritionist, but healthy eating is important to me. I was fortunate to have grown up knowing that there is a healthy way of eating (instead of dieting). It all depends on your choices in foods, how much you consume, and your exercising habits. Loosing weight is difficult, and you will not see immediate results (if done in a healty way), but give it some time and you will. Eat lots of veggies...fruits have a lot of natural sugars (still good for you)....carbs give you energy (not good to eat before bed because they turn into sugar)...protien keeps you strong, and finally drink your share of water and exercise if you're able to (even if it's only for short time spans...every little bit helps). I have heard that drinking too much water can flush out vitamins and minerals that your body needs. There are some websites out there that will calculate your daily water needs according to your weight and height. I haven't done a lot of research on this, but I carry my water bottle with me everywhere! You know, quitting smoking has a lot of positive side effects such as wanting to live an overall healthier lifestyle like eating healthier and exercising more - all of which makes people feel better. Sorry for the rambling.......Stay strong and keep in mind that almost everything in life takes a little bit of work ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/15/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 27 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 411 Amount Saved: $108 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 22 Mins: 51 Seconds: 24

Dear Laural and everyone who has gained some weight. I too have gained aroud 10 lbs so far and I am discouraged as well. I quit at the same time I went off of thyroid meds because I had to have a nuclear scan and a biopsy in 30 days and you had to be off of the meds in order to do it. Well, my biopsy came out well, no cancer, but I think it wrecked havoc with my metabolism. I can't tell if it was from that or from stopping. It does seem like overnight weight gain. I am back on my meds but I am still gaining weight. I hope it will be only a matter of time till everything evens out. I am walking 2 miles 4 to 5 x's a week, too, watching what I eat but I rather be fat than pick up a cig again. If anyone has an answer, please clue us in. Is this normal? Yes I gained very quick!!! I think some of it is water retention but it is still feels like an overnight gain. I have gained almost 8 lbs in 6 weeks and bumped myself up a size and I am working out more. Hang in there my Dr says it should balance out further down the road. I abused my body for 20yrs with nasty chemicals not going to let a few pounds get me down!!! Good for you on quitting, that is the best thing you can do for yourself!!!! Hi Laura =) I have read where most ex-smokers will gain 8 - 10 pounds the 1st 4 weeks of their quits. I wouldnt really worry about it at the moment. You can easily lose that extra weight later on by incorprating extra exercise =) What is important is that you protect your quit even if it means eating a fattening bran muffin =) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/21/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 143 Amount Saved: $28 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 6 Mins: 15 Seconds: 3

I think what has hit me in the head is where the commercial says, "Low Riders or Lung Cancer?" and the female is looking in the mirror with a smoke hanging out of her mouth. I cannot even watch that commercial and I have to either mute the tv or change the channel. I shudder with fear each time it comes on. How do these commercials effect you? I am curious if they have the same effect on you as they do me. Yes Laural, I've gained 11 lbs. I haven't lost yet, but decided I refuse let the gain get in the way of my quit. Protect the quit, the rest will balance itself out. I don't normally even look at this thread very often... However, when I quit 5 months ago I put on about 20 lbs in the first month :8o: I was appalled and disgusted with the weight! I tried dieting and became so discouraged... Finally gave up on the dieting. In about the last month, without dieting, I have lost about 10 of those pounds. I think your whole body and mind goes through so much during the quit process. I recommend chucking the dieting idea until you are more secure in your quit!

Laural, Interesting question! Don't be too hard on yourself about the weight gain. Even though you may not be eating more, your gut is better able to absorb nutrients. Your body just needs some time to adjust. 6 lbs never killed anyone, smoking does. ;) Danielle ___________________________ The SSC Support Team
