Hi, Bingo. Congratulations on your fitness plan.
I remember my first time on the treadmill, too. I made it about 20 minutes at 2.5 MPH and 0 incline and that was it, I was done for the day! gasp, wheeze, pant Now I do an hour at 3.5 MPH (still walking) and 5% incline, ending up breathing hard (but steady), soaking wet, and feeling great!
I think the fear you're feeling is, like before you quit, the fear of failure. Just remember, you can always bail on the fitness plan just like you can always bail on your quit. But somehow, I don't think you will. ;)
Just like the quit, it'll be rough at first. Over time, though, the rough spots will smooth out and you'll actually begin to enjoy it. This is #2 great move for yourself. Awesome!! :)
