What should I do for medication?

Hi Emily93,

I am sorry you are going through this right now.  We are all here to listen.

I want to echo what ~m has just said; in the short post you have written I can tell you are very mature and articulate for your age.  Don't you forget who you are going through this difficult time. Remember that this depression is not you.  You can find relief, with proper education, support and possibly medication.

Seeing your family doctor, visiting a crisis center, a community center or social services in your community are all great resources.  Individuals there will be able to direct you to the appropriate avenues for support and medication.  In regards to funding you will have to look into what is available in your community.  Search for local social services and you should be able to find a webpage or address where you can go for more information.

Hi Emily, welcome to the Depression Center.   The answer to your question about funding treatment depends on what country you are in. As for what medication to take, the answer is the same no matter where you live... you need to see a doctor and get evaluated.  Medications can be very helpful, but you need a professional to help you figure out if that is what you need or if there is an alternative.  You are very wise for 18 years old... to be willing to seek out help is a very mature and courageous decision.  There is hope.  There is help.

I've been depressed for the last two years and have rejected the thought of getting prescribed medication due to what others have warned me about it. Very recently, my boyfriend and I broke up because it has been getting out of hand (He suffers from depression as well, but takes Wellbutrin, which seems to work for him); I have lost almost all motivation to maturely address any issues I may have, I can get very irritable, in addition to other symptoms. And now my depression is even more severe since we broke up.

In the past, I've tried exercising, herbal teas, and even Saint John's Wort to improve my mood, but nothing seems to be effective.

I just recently turned 18 and don't have any money or insurance, but I feel that it is time to get appropriate medication. However, I'm concerned I won't be able to get the help I need because of expenses. I need help as fast as possible. What should I do or where should I start? Is it possible to get prescribed medication under my circumstances?
