Bob, Thank you so much. I really needed to hear that since it has been a year and a half since I stopped my exercise classes (aerobic dancing and water aerobics) I have been feeling worse and worse ever since despite my medication. I am printing up your answer and I know I will read it and re-read it and will get back to you soon. Again, all my thanks. Trisha

patricia don't give up on exercise. i didn't exercise, added weight and acquired diabetes..a threatening dangerous, diabilitating disease that robs me of the quality of life and will take years of the future away from me. in our family two siblings didn't exercise much and we are dysfunctional, stressed and significant under-achievers. The other three exercised religiously and are very energetic and successful people. if there is one thing i would do over again, if i could in my past, it would be to exercise consistently. we have only one body, in our life. if we don't use it, we lose it. we suffer. if we don't exercise we give up. that's sort of what depression is about. we find that it is easier to give up, than to function in the world. we are certainly not motivated to exercise. one of my brothers was lost in the wilderness overnight, during a very cold winter. he knew if he were to give in to his desire to sleep, he would freeze to death, and never wake up. he had to fight to stay awake, to stay alive. when we are depressed we have to fight to exercise. exercise is absolutely essential to a functional life. there are hundreds of ways to motivate or trick ourselves to exercise. i just re-discovered photography, in the digital form. i can walk around for hours taking photos, for example. good luck...life for depressed people can be a tough uphill battle. bob

I find it very difficult to exercise. I know it will help my depression and increase the efficacy of the medication I am on but I seem unable to do what I need to do to feel better. It's as though I've given up at some deep level after decades of struggle. I think however for some of us depression may meet a need to be passive and just "let be." Maybe it's not all that bad. Maybe we just have to let go until we actually get up and do what we need to do and stop trying to force ourselves out of some misplaced guilt to do it before we are ready.

I'm sorry things are so tough for you right now. It must me very difficult. But you're right. Reaching out to others who are somehow muddling through can really help. I myself had a particular bad night on Friday but I'm here and sometimes that's about the best I can say. But today is a little better. I guess I've learned not to look too far ahead where my depression is concerned. Otherwise it is just too depressing (no pun intended!).

ladyblue42; Yes, I had about seven years of various therapies. After that I moved to another country, and over here the only thing I have been offered is medication. They just ask me how I'm doing and take my blood pressure, and that's about it, because they don't want to speak English. I know I could get some other kinds of treatments, however I cannot afford them and; I have done a lot of research and reading about the various therapies available, but it is kind of difficult to get where I live now, so I am writing to this site, and have followed the cognitive therapy program last year, which seemed to help a little; but does not take away the problems. I am somewhat doubtful now about any therapies, except that to talk about my problems with people who understand is comforting!

One more thing...are you getting therapy? If not, give it a try. And if you don't connect with one therapist, try another. The first one I had many years ago was not so good. The one I have now is wonderful for me. He "gets" me and that really helps.

hey again I don't want to sound flippant or anything but I once heard a quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt. He said, "When you're at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." I think of that saying all the time when I get really, really down. I think for right now, you just need to hang on until you see the doctor. Tell him/her about the social phobia and how it is affecting your ability to interact with others. Some medications are better at dealing with that than others. Be sure to mention your lack of energy too. Sometimes it helps to write everything down so you don't forget. Even if you get new or more meds, remember that it can take a couple of weeks for full affect so try not to get discouraged. I'll be thinking about you in the mean time and I hope you'll do the same for me. Please don't give up on yourself! Take care. lb

When I am depressed, I can't think of dieting or exercise. At the same time, I can't think of cooking because I don't want to think about food - it has been the bain of my life, along with my other problems that I have I just want to stay in bed. How can I deal with this? Do I need to take stronger medications? I will see my doctor in two weeks , but I think I will try to get more...although it is also part of the problem. What am I to do? I'm at the end of the rope.
