Feeling hopeless

Hi, Ruth. Well it sounds like even though depressed and ill, you've manage to become Internet-savvy at 77? Wow, that's terrific! You know, most of us kick ourselves in the behind when in later years we realize that our elders held so much interesting stuff in their heads and we didn't take advantage of the time we had with them to ask things. If my Grandma were still around and Internet-savvy like you, I'd encourage her to surf the Net and find one of the places that lets you write about your life, sort of a diary site. There are lots of those sites. I have been friends with two lady writers who began to write in their seventies. Their stories are really something, some interesting, some hilarious. I love to read their stuff about growing up. Do you write short stories?

To Tracey: If you have another adult in your family who lives close by, like an uncle or grandparent, you should talk to them and enlist their support as well. The most important thing is to not deal with your depression alone. When school resumes, it might be helpful to talk to your teachers. As a teacher myself, I know that I do everythinbg in my power to make my students' experience as positive as possible, and enlisting their support would be a good idea. To Jane: We cannot live in the past. The hardest person to recieve forgiveness from is always the self, but we need to accept that we are human and make mistakes. My depression rears its ugly head when I make a mistake and start to dwell on it. I know I have my depression under control when I can accept my mistakes and flaws and move on. Best of luck to both of you. We are all in this battle together. Mike.

Thanks. I have let people down whom I care about. I have apologized and tried to make amends. Everyone has accepted my apologies, but I can't seem to forgive myself. I am trying though, may be with time I will feel better. It is so hard.

Hi, Jane. If you've done some awful stuff and feel sorry for it, have you apologized and tried to make amends? Maybe then you can forgive yourself. Remorse is not unhealthy. Do go about entering a positive construction phase.

I am feeling very guilty about things that I have done. The guilt is overwhelming and I feel like a terrible person. I feel that no likes me and that almost everyone that I know is out to get me. There are a few people that I completely trust. I just want these feelings to go away, but they are not.

Tracey, Your issue cannot be put on a back burner because of someone else's situation. It is your right to get medical help. And a child who does not get medical help may turn out to be a worry issue for the parent anyway. If you don't want to bother your mom at the moment, can you talk it over with your dad and ask him to make an appointment for you to see a doctor? I would urge you to take the free depression test and print it out to show a doctor. The test does not diagnose, but it might give some clues to your doctor and help to break the ice in discussing the problems with hime/her.
