Need counseling on therapy

Hi Sickdragon, I can totally relate to what you are saying. I have gone to so many quack psychologists...one even had me play in a sandbox (I was 28/29 years old)...too bizarre. Anyways, I hate to say it but it was just plain luck and a matter of trying out different people before I found a psychiatrist that I connect with perfectly. It really has made a huge difference to me. The funny thing is he isn't what I would have set out to find. a) I NEVER would have chosen a man...but his being a supportive, non-judgemental male figure in my life has helped me reevaluate and understand all my contacts with other men in my life b) He is super calm and quiet and non-directive...normally I would look for someone who is more outgoing and directive. Him not telling me what to do, but instead helping me find my own solutions, has really helped me. Changes have taken longer and I have really had to face some tough issues...but it is ME making the changes and the decisions, not my therapist making them for me. c) The number one reason he is so good is that he is 100% supportive and accepting of ALL my behaviour ...wow I could not even have conceptualized this possibility. Other therapists would always try to correct my behaviour. He allows me to recognize and correct my own behaviour/learn to recognize where I am making my mistakes. He never, ever makes a judgement about my behaviour. I don't mean we don't discuss it...I mean he "loves" (i.e. accepts and cares for me) me no matter what I do, how "bad" I think I have been etc. This makes it possible for me to 100% honest with him about everything that I do...which in turn makes our therapy more useful. I trust him. Good luck in finding a great therapist...They are out there. ...Aqua

Welcome Sickdragon. When something so deep and personal as a therapy where you bare all, a good rapport and confidence in being helped is necessary. Sometimes you have to try a few before finding that one therapist who's the "right fit". There's nothing wrong in this. If you click on the following page, it may help you in this decision. http://www.depressioncenter.net/about/how/therapy.cfm

Hello, I'm new here and I need some counseling, I hope you can help me out. I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder. I came to this diagnostic because I was experiencing great gastrical problems and my doctor ordered a psychology test performed. The test showed that I was very depressed and stressed. My doctor prescribed Alrprozalam, but he told me I must get into some kind of therapy, or else my symptoms wouldn't disappear because he wasn't addressing the root of the problem but only the symptoms. Now, this wasn't a surprise to me; I knew. I have even been in therapy. The problem is, I have never found a phychologist that I liked. I guess it sounds shallow, that I didn't like the doctors, but I happen to think the rapport with your therapist is a great step towards the success of therapy. One of them kept telling me I should find God in order to be well. I'm an atheist and told her so, but she said that was my problem and once it was solved everything would go well. Another one kept asking me to relate my issues with my parents, and I was unable to do so. It just so happens I don't think all my problems are my parent's fault. The last one I went with, the one who performed the personality test on me, when he saw I didn't believe much in therapy, started attacking me. My boyfriend is into psychology, and he says it's just that I've had the worst luck ever when it comes to psychologists. That it is just a matter of finding out which therapy school best suits me. Now, I don't know anything about that, and I do think I need some help, so I'm posting this in hopes someone might help me find a site or something where I can read about the different styles for therapy, or what is it I should look for in a psychologist. Thank you very much.
