Situationl Depression?

for 21 år siden 0 1 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Lynn - I've been struggling with depression for six years now and the first time I ever knew I had a "real problem" was after getting through an extremely difficult summer job as a camp counselor. I didn't know it, but I melted down towards the end of the summer and it just kept getting worse. I became so depressed I was hospitalized by the first week in December. I was told that my situation had triggered this intense bout of depression, but that indeed it was just a trigger and there were many underlying issues. So, I definitely believe in situations triggering depression, but for me it hasn't been the kind of thing where I just deal with the situation and the resulting depression, it's been an ongoing battle since then. As far as I know situational depression isn't a formal diagnostic term, but I could be wrong on that one. Karen Karen

Many years ago when I was in school, there were supposedly 3 kinds of depression: manic-depressive depression, situational and major depression. Since then the DSM has been rewritten a few times and new names have been assigned to these disorders. As I understood it, situational depression was something that resulted from a sudden change in life-death of a loved one, house lost, divorce, etc. something with an abrupt onset and a relatively short duration of emotional change...6 months or a year, I think it was. Anyhow, things have changed with diagnostics and definitions and labels. I thought my bout with depression was situational 5 years ago. Thought that it was brought on by 1) quitting smoking, and 2) loss in income due to weather interference with my business outdoors. So I started smoking and nothing changed. Then I began working regularly and still nothing changed. In fact, I could not get up and going to GET TO WORK, so I saw my doc and got on antidepressant medication and that is when my depression lifted. While the therapist I saw was understanding and helpful in being compassinate about both the smoking and the loss of employment, it was the medication that actually changed the way I felt on waking. I am not sure that I would have the ability to discern one type of depression from the other once I am in it. I am scared to death of it, no matter what kind of depression it is. It is a matter of life and death to me, as far as I am concerned. It runs in my family, too. Michael

In my experience, situational depression can trigger an episode of major depression. That is, although a particular situation may "set you off" what results is a major depressive episode. I know it seems to go that way for me. I seem to be pretty easy to "set off". Hope this helps! Ann

Hi, This is an acronym for seasonal affective disorder. You'll find a definition of it and other terms in our Depression Glossary at the left.

Thanks for your answers. I'll have to show her this site and your replies. My workmate says she knows she has SAD in any case.

Hi, Lynn. Certainly stress can make symptoms worse and the onset of depression often has to do with "situations" such as loss, interpersonal disputes and life/role transitions. Perhaps your friend means something like that.

I don't know what situational depression is. The only thing I can think is when a person gets depessed over a certain situation. I believe this is different than Major Depressive Disorder which lasts for days, weeks, months or longer. A professional could answer this question best.
