Fear of taking medication :/

Hi!

You are not alone. I suffered many years with anxiety over medication starting as a teen, I'm in my 40's now. My mom was a nurse and she would get a prescription for me and I'd fake taking it. I was afraid that something horrible would happen, that I'd lose control, have an allergic reaction. I was afraid I would be poisoned. I should note that during this period of time. I didn't tell anyone about my fears. So you've made a huge step in telling us. Good for you!
I still get slightly anxious. The biggest help was letting someone I trust know. Telling my healthcare provider, sometimes I would discuss my fears with the pharmacist even. I was surprised at how nonjudgmental these people are and willing to acknowledge my anxiety while reassuring me. Once I let my secret out, I wasn't as afraid. For me, even if I was told to take something in the evening... The first time taking a medicine, I would take it in the morning, on a day that I was off. It helped because I don't feel as alone and in my head as I do at night. And having someone around helped too. You can do this. Take care.

Hi JRCdyer,

I suggest getting started on the program ASAP. Managing the anxiety will make a lot more sense once you understand cognitive behaviour therapy concepts. You will learn to work on challenging the thoughts that are making you anxious about taking the pill. If you want some relief right away you might want to check out the section on relaxation techniques. With the tools and with pratice it will become easier. Be sure to keep us updated!

LAst time I had a problem taking medication because of anxiety, I asked for help from a person I trusted. I asked the person to be there and to monitor me for a few hours after me taking the pill. It really helped me face my fears knowing someone was there for me.

I too have gasteritis not sure on the cause yet awaiting results.  But i get terrified on taking medication of any type. Usually as i am engulfed with negative thoughts that i will have a reaction to the tablets and they will cause me harm.  Usually i prefer to avoid them all together. I tried medications for anxiety too which has always led to my anxiety being worse for a short time so now i avoid all when i can. However, i feel like i really should get a grip on myself and try and be more positive.

Hello,

A few days ago, I was prescribed a prescription for gastritis, probably brought on by stress. I know I need the medication, but I can't seem to make myself take it. I picked up the prescription on Thursday and have been staring at the bottle ever since.

The funny thing is, when my anxiety problems started, they had nothing to do with pills. It was probably better described as agoraphobia at the time, and in recent years has become more of generalized thing. I've been successfully managing my anxiety for months, only now, due to this whole prescription thing, I'm afraid I'm going to throw myself right back into the loop. I really, really don't want that to happen.

Is there any advice or similar experiences to this that someone has had? What did you do to finally make yourself take the pill? I keep trying to think of other things, to relax myself and not think about it, but whenever I feel like I'm ready to take the pill I just end up staring at it some more and then giving up.

I'm aware that in the end all I have to do to get over this is take the pill, but getting there is really giving me problems. All of those "What if...?" questions and worries are fogging up my common sense at the moment.

Anyway, thanks for hearing me out.
