Therapeutic Effects of Gardening

Davit,
I feel humbled when you speak of your challenges, and keep persevering.  It concerns me deeply when I realize that someone's dependent on me, and I question my priorities.  There's just so little left of me, I'm not sure I'm making those decisions right.

It's tough looking back, but it's a frame of reference, isn't it?  Looking back, I can easily see how I could have made the present easier by doing something different, but how does one erase one's memory, since it's necessary for reference?

You sound like my yesterday. Tomorrow will be another day. I have to move a sprinkler to the potatoes now and don't want too lol. The heat has rung me out. Let me refraze that, I want to move a sprinkler I just don't have the energy.

The veggies I put in look like Helen Keller was out helping in the garden.  I was so tired, I just wanted to get in 4 huge tomato plants, and divide the basil among 3 vases.  I also have to put in the parsley and beans, and then take care of them for the rest of the season.  Those basil are high maintenance.  In the morning, I'll water the front lawns.  I just want to go to bed.  The dishes need to be done first.

Wow.

Still hot but aside from one leaky hose I have one sprinkler going. Usually it is more trouble. So this will be a third of the gardens that I don't have to hand water. This is a real good feeling. It is only a portable sprinkler and I still have to move and remount two permanent sprinklers they can wait till tomorrow. I might actually get supper on time.

42C in the sun on my deck, Im going to put out the Umbrella. I'm soaking wet but the pump is hooked up to the pond and the hoses. Just need to string out the power line and fill the suction line and I can attach it to the sprinklers. It might even work. (something usually goes wrong, a cracked fitting or something) If so it will have to wait till tuesday. Sweat in my eyes stings. It has never been this hot that I can remember.

Hi Davit,

Your 'PS' couldn't be more true, especially with regards to watching what we eat when we feel anxious/depressed.  Food and mood are so closely connected and often we choose the processed, fast-foods that weigh us down even more - mentally & physically.
Glad to hear you're having a better day today!  Brave of you to make five alarm chilli in the heat!

ps - you're only as old as you feel!

Vincenza

At this stage of the game the anxiety is temporary.  As I have mentioned often anxiety potential never goes away, it just gets buried and made ineffectual. But if you are tired or struggling with something you can dig past the surface looking for an answer and get into the negative that is only buried. Rest puts me back on track but it is sure annoying because it is close to uncontrollable. Today I am fine considering how hot it is and how much I don't like the heat and glaring sun.
(see my post to rohit)

How do I deal with it? By thinking positives. And in this case it is get as much pleasure as I can, do as much as I can and remember in a few short months I will put the tools away and the snow will cover what I didn't get done. And I can dream of future Gardens.

Aim high and accept what you get. You will be surprised how much more it is than you thought you could do.
This morning I made five alarm chilli and it will simmer for six hours. See this is how I take my mind off the fact that I have a project not going as fast as I'd like. There is an old saying, When in a hurry, slow down. It will get done faster without the stress.

What I really want to do is scrape the weeds in the driveway with my little tractor so that will be my bribe for going out in the sun and working on the garden watering pump. You will notice I never said finish it. Finish is where I aim is all. It may be too much for a hot day and a tired me.

I forget that I am 62, still feel like 40, look like 80. My solution, don't look in mirrors or still water.

Davit

PS, When you are tired and the negatives are getting close to the surface avoid activities that will help them along. Don't watch annoying programs and avoid complaining people. Find something pleasant to do and watch what you eat and how much.

Hi Davit,

I agree with Red, it sounds like your body needed and deserved some rest.  You have many projects on the go and it is evident how much joy it brings you (and what beautiful images you have to show the work you do)!  How do you deal with the anxiety that surfaces when you don't get to the tasks that you planned to do?

It is cooler so I woke up and finished watering. I'd like to go out and put the back blade on my little tractor but will wait till tomorrow. It is to sheer the weeds coming up in the driveway. Then I have to take it off and put the mower on but first I have to sharpen it. Nothing is ever simple. But it will stay on that tractor most of the summer and the tiller on the other one. The third tractor does nothing but tow around my manure spreader full of flowers so I can mow under it.

Thank you for being concerned about me. Some times it seems like so much work just to have to do it all over again next year. But the truth is when it goes right it is so right.

Davit
