Realistic Self Care Rules

Hi Everyone,

Self care is in important topic often recommended and also often misunderstood. Self care is essential for everyone, but especially for those who struggle with depression. I recently read this article: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/lifespan-perspectives/201909/four-realistic-rules-better-self-care? and I found it to be refreshingly concise and accurate. The points discussed are listed below, but I highly recommend reading the short article in its entirety.

Four Realistic Rules to Better Self Care

  1. Self Care includes self talk: Often over looked, yet an essential part of self care. How you think about a situation, yourself or the world directly impacts how you feel about it. Working on habits of unhelpful thinking is a continual process and an important part of self care. This program is one example of how to work on unhelpful patterns of thinking.
  2. Distractions can be helpful, but only for awhile: Distractions can be great forms of self care, but if you use distractions too often it can be counter productive. Over use of distractions can cause avoiding, numbing out and ignoring issues that may need addressing
  3. Find ways to emotionally process your experiences: "Self-care means paying attention to your emotions and giving care and attention to them." There are many ways to process experiences like posting here, journaling, talking to a therapist or friend, exercising, dancing, crying, having a creative outlet etc.
  4. Take care of your physical health: Food, water, sleep, exercise, hygiene and medical needs are essential and sometimes overlooked when we are feeling stressed. Small, regular steps towards greater physical health can make a big difference.

How do you practice self care? Which rule do you think you need to focus on now?

Ashley
