Hi David, Happy post Thanksgiving to you as well! I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mother when you were that young. It must have been very hard to deal with and I am very sorry. It is good to hear that you have a loving support person in your life that you seem to love just as much :) EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. It is widly used with veterans in the military and people that experience trauma with great results. How my therapist explained it to me is that EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. Normal information processing is resumed, so following a successful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings when the event is brought to mind. You still remember what happened, but it is less upsetting. Many types of therapy have similar goals. However, EMDR appears to be similar to what occurs naturally during dreaming or REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Therefore, EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way. Anyone doing EMDR therepy with you has to be certified in it so you may have to look in your area to find a specialist. After my assault I was going to try it but then with good CBT I seemed to hold my own and have not tried it yet. I would have in a heartbeat had my CBT not controlled my PTSD and related symptoms. This may be something that would help you however so please talk it over with your doc or therapist and see what they think. Have a great day and let me know how you are doing. Beth :)

Hello to you both, and Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for the thoughts and advice. I've delt with these symptoms for probably 2/3 of my life. I'm now 40. I was seeing a very good therapist for about 10 years and went over a number of issues, including losing my mother to cancer when I was ten, and a number of other issues. I live a bit far from her now so I only go when really neccesary. The feelings I described can stay with me a few weeks, or be gone for a few months and then resurface. I guess it's easiest to come here and vent when they happen. I'm on a very small amount of meds right now. I was on prozac from 1993 to 2003, but got off it because I felt it was not doing any good. I worked with my doctor and got off it slowly. I do take amytripulin/perphenazine. It's a mild anti depressant and anti phsycotic. I also take a number of natural suppliments, plenty of B-vitamins and others. My diagnosis from several doctors is that I suffer from atypical depression, which basically means I have anxiety, panic disorder, depression and all the symptoms that go together with those. It's a surety they I do also have some sort of post traumatic stress disorder. Losing my mother at 10 was so terrible. I sometimes felt abandoned. But I also worked on that with my therapist and when I'd participate in group therapy. As far as lifestyle, I exercise regularly, eat well and stay away from bad habits like drinking, smoking, etc. Anyway, I'd be interested in learning more about what treatment you described. I forget what you called it. I have tried CBT, but not regularly. I think the best medicine I found yet comes in the form of love from my wife of just under a year. January will be our First Anniversary :) OK, better end here for now. Please let me know a little more detail about what you mentioned. Take care, David

Hi David, I am sorry this is happening to you and please know you are not alone. Although I have never experienced depersonalization nor dissociation myself, I have touched on it in counceling as I have PTSD and some people with PTSD do get these symptoms so we did go over the symptoms. I am wondering, do you see a councelor and if so, have you been DX with PTSD? If so, I have heard that EMDR therepy is great for depersonalization and dissociation and has a very good success ratio. A good therepist that specializes in these symptoms can help you really gain control over them. From what mine told me reality has not actually been lost it is only the ability to experience it that is temporarily beyond reach (which creates fear and more anxiety) and with good CBT, relaxation, stress reduction tools this can be managed well and in some cases totally resolved. You are doing great and sound like a go getter which is good. Keep your thoughts positive and know you are not alone. Hang in there and keep us posted! Beth :) .

Hi David, Great to hear from you. You have the right idea - reach out for support and vent whenever you need it. That is why we are all here. Unfortunately these sudden thoughts such as you have described are part of having panic and anxiety. Fellow members will be responding soon with their thoughts on this. Keep us posted, Casey ____________________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

OK, I'll set it up: I had been mostly feeling well for a while and then you feel the bad feelings coming on, and you know you may be going through another cycle, or one is on its way. But you do all your work, go through your day and get things done. This is a normal day for just about anyone of us, and then it happened. I was sitting at my desk at work taking my lunch break. I was reading something on a web site and all of a sudden I had a moment of dissociation mixed with depersonalization. They're basically the same thing when you think about it. I am not sure if something I was reading (a wrestling web site) or maybe my blood sugar was off, but have you ever had that feeling just come at you and you are taken back to the bad feelings. My job is very stressful, which is also not helping the situation. I am currently looking for a new job while studying to become a personal trainer. Anyway, the day I experienced this was last week. I have been Ok since then, but getting out of bed in the morning can be rough bcause you fear it may happen again. I spoke with my doctor recently and he agreed my method of taking diazepam when needed and even ina prevention manner is a good idea. I often try and be Superman, thinking I do not need any help. Has anyone ever experienced the sudden onslaught of dissocation? I ask because I have a lot, so it's nothing new, but it does not make anymore pleasant when it happens. OK, thanks for listening. I needed to vent. David
