Noise Anxiety

for 5 år siden 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0

I get anxious when my bf turns the radio up so high that people have to shout over it.. or when people around me talk loudly. People that talk loud.. Crowds bother me as well, I think mainly because of the noise. I mean, don't get me wrong i like my music, but loud noises have always bothered me. You never hear people talk about anxiety due to noise. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Welcome!

Noise sensitivity can be related to anxiety or a sensory processing disorder like ADHD. You might want to talk to a doctor about possible causes or this anxiety. If it is solely related to anxiety then cognitive behaviour therapy may help. It is great that you already know your triggers - a fan blowing and people talking loudly. A big part of the CBT will be reframing what these sounds mean to you and changing the thoughts and desensitizing the sensations that are occuring. This will help to change you anxious feelings. This program is based on CBT and would be a great place to start.
Have you had a chance to check out the program yet?

I understand completely.

It is association since it is more than one noise that triggers. If you look for it you will find a traumatic situation that was noisy. Being lost in a mall as a kid? That one is common. Living by Railroad tracks or an airport. Or just something you were forced to do that was noisy. My noisy tractor doesn't bother me or music but my food processor does. Noise that doesn't belong is especially bad. And I don't like the fan.

I have the same thing. Some noises almost make me panic. They make me super anxious. People talking loudly, sudden loud noises, the doorbell, the phone,…

I have the same thing. I haven't figured out how to deal with it yet. If I do, I will share!

I can't say that I understand...as I have a fan (or something) blowing all the time, especially at night.  I need the white noise in order to sleep (and the louder the better).

Hi there. Does anyone else here experience "noise anxiety"? I have had a problem with this for awhile now, but it has gotten worse and more frequent in the past 6 months. One of the worst noises for me is when a fan is blowing. Both the noise of the fan and the sounds of the air blowing things makes me feel very anxious/tense/moody. When someone speaks when a fan is blowing I also feel that I can hardly hear what is being said which gives me even more anxiety. In addition and connected to the noise anxiety, I also feel an even higher level of panic whenever I'm in a situation where more than one person is talking in a room, and when anyone speaks or laughs loudly. I would very much like to talk to anyone else who has similar experiences. No one that I am around currently understands what I mean, but it's a very serious issue to me. :( Thanks for listening.
