I think this is the principle behind the book by Max Malz, who wrote Phychocybernetics. It's by a surgeon who does cosmetic surgery, and arrives at the conclusion that cosmetic surgery didn't change his patients view of themselves or their "self-esteem", despite others responding to their surgery and outer looks.
Any one who doesn't have skeletons in their closet probably doesn't have a closet. I regret some of the past but know I can't change it. I keep the door on my closet closed unless I'm about to make the same mistake again.
