Gaining weight! :(

Aloha aloha! I am doing great on day 3 of my quit. Was euphoric earlier and the crashed into a million pieces an hour ago. But after a few minutes of well deserved self-pity (yeah, right!) I drank some water, chewed some gum and I was fine. About the weight loss, I joined Weight Watchers. I lost a total of 50 pounds and made lifetime so as long as I stay 3 pounds under goal it is free for life. Just my personal recommendation but I love it and trust me, I am back totally on program - I know how it sneaks up on you. Good luck and keep in touch! imaquitter im looking forward to your quit. Also, if you could clue me into your secret of losing weight, I'd much appreciate it. Ive only gained 4 lbs since i quit, but had gained weight before i quit. And I think you are so right...ditch the cigs first, the pounds will come off. anyways...looking forward to tomorrow with you -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 150 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,000 Amount Saved: $1,020.00 Life Gained: Days: 20 Hrs: 21 Mins: 29 Seconds: 11

Hi all :) Yrs. ago when I attempted a quit, I went to a smoking cessation class and I remember the person there telling us all that it's normal to gain 7lbs. but anything over that is b/c we're eatting too much. I was overweight when I smoked. I actually lost a few lbs last month when I was trying to quit. I figure I'm over weight and smoking and I'd rather be over weight and smoke free. That's note on the frig helps me too! I have one that says, don't think of what you're giving up, think of what your getting. When I had my last yr quit I planned a trip & started working out at the gym b/c I wanted to lose weight before I went and I've done the same thing this time. One time I joined Jenny C. and lost 42 lbs. But to be honest, this time it's everything I can do to drum up enough motivation to stay quit. I'm having a heck of a time :( Especially right now. But I'm drinking water, taking deep breaths and typing my butt off, trying to keep my mind occupied & focused. Because the truth is I hate smoking and I love being smoke-free! Just breathe......ahhhhhhhhh My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 2 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 40 Amount Saved: $9.60 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 6 Mins: 54 Seconds: 35

Hi Cat - My quit starts tomorrow, but I have been down this road once before. The one thing I DON'T worry about is weight gain. One reason, my health is worth more - I can lose the weight but cancer sticks. But last time I actually lost 10 pounds. I joined a weight loss group and was determined not to gain weight - plus exercise is a great deterrent. Good luck! Traci

Tresa, I love your quote you put on your post it. I am mentoring a friend who is three weeks into quitting and she is complaining about the weight thing. I'm going to tell her about how long you have been quit and your quote. Love it! Thank you very much everyone! I though at first that this writing and reading thing in the forum would be something kind of silly but after all it does help to hear all the supportive answers and the ideas for helping me! Thank you all! And I really liked that one about the ephizema! I think that'll work for my mind! :) Many many kisses and may I have the wisdom and strength to stop smoking once and for all!

Cat, Welcome to our support community! We know where you are coming from and we can help. Take the time to prepare yourself for this journey. You can't keep the frame of mind that if you gain weight you will resume smoking! Use coping mechanisms and avoidance techniques to keep you quit and push away those craves. Start drinking more water to help maintain your weight and help flush out the toxins from your body. Take it one step at a time, as your body will try and heal itself with all the new changes, it may take some time. Also work with your doctor to come up with a plan that is right for you and your body :) Josie, Support Specialist

The weight thing is usually a little problem because we try to satisfy our need for nicotine, with food, try not to do this, and get the quit done then work on the weight. I kept a post it on my refrigerator that said ( I CAN LOOSE WEIGHT, BUT I CANT LOOSE EMPHYSEMA ).let this help and hang tough in the quit :) Tresa My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/8/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1825 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 36,500 Amount Saved: $6,387.50 Life Gained: Days: 257 Hrs: 7 Mins: 47 Seconds: 43

Ol Catrafusa e bem-vindo! The weight gain can be a problem and there is much advice here on this thread on how to deal with it. What I would say is that it may prove difficult to control the weight and quit smoking at the same time. I'd concentrate on quitting smoking first and then address the weight issue once you are more comfortable in your quit. Some can do both but whatever you decide I wish you well. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1176 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,520 Amount Saved: 5,880.00 Life Gained: Days: 188 Hrs: 20 Mins: 54 Seconds: 4
