Mercy - I totally get it. I might be disappointed if I couldn't swim in the ocean or couldn't eat a certain food but it's not like they were ever that important to me anyway. On the other hand, for a good part of my life, I didn't believe that I could ever have fun, deal with stress or basically live without smoking. Even when I stopped believing this, every day was a reminder of that addiction because every day was full of activities that served as triggers. Some people seem to have no problems discarding cigarettes from their life...for me it's a gradual learning process that there is "life" after quitting and I "can" do all these things without my addiction. Hope you are feeling better. Mercy, I totally understand what you're saying. When we look at the "big picture", we say this is forever! OMG how scary is that! I really try hard not to allow myself that thought. Everyday I wake up and say...for today, I will not smoke. Don't think in terms of "forever", you'll just freak yourself out. I know, I've done it a time or two. ONE DAY AT A TIME. Mercy, I think I know what you're saying. You want us to think about one of those NEVER situations that's easy for our minds to grasp so that NEVER smoking again becomes more clear. Is that right? I will never smoke again..... and I will never stop loving my children....EVER. Guess what I was trying to say was: It isn't just smoking we never do. There is many other things we would "never" do...yet we don't frett. After learing about nutra sweet I will "never" use it. Yet I don't get all upset that I don't use it.. so why get upset that after learing about smoking I will "never" smoke. I learned that those sharks lurk in very shallow water...I know I will "never" go swimming in the ocean. I'm not obessed about the fact I choose not to swim in the ocean..so why be obssesed that I choose not to ever smoke. There is allot of nevers in life and we accept them. Yet when it comes to smoking we don't want to go there. I'm trying to throw the "never" smoking into the same catogory as the rest of my "nevers" in life and let it be. :) Gosh... the second post I wrote today that I don't think makes sense. Is there a vitamin that improves brain cells. Mercy, I used to be afraid that I would: NEVER have a cigarette with my morning coffee again NEVER have a smoke with a beer NEVER smoke on holiday again NEVER smoke while watching football Now, I NEVER worry about these things Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 436 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,089 Amount Saved: 3270 Life Gained: Days: 71 Hrs: 2 Mins: 28 Seconds: 51

Mercy - I think that NEVER issue is what scares a lot of us going into a quit in the first place. I know that was the case for me. But I think we have to keep living in the present and take it day by day (or hour by hour, minute by minute!) in order to be successful. You are ahead of me, so I don't yet know how I'll feel at 60 or 90 days. I HOPE that I'll still feel so good and not be eating my words! :gasp: But, since you wanted NEVER examples : I'll NEVER stop liking chocolate! I'll NEVER go back to work at my former job! Hope that helps! Quitting our addiction is probably the skeeeeeeeeeeeeeeriest thing that we have ever done....but now that I've gone through the quitting process and the dieting process, they do have some similarities. 1) They are painful at first 2) They are rewarding in the end 3) Quitting smoking and watching our diet both improve our health.... But, most of all, for either to succeed, they require a change in lifestyle. Exercise and healthy eating will have to be a regular part of my life if I'm actually going to keep the weight off. The good part about dieting is that you can "cheat" and, you're right, when you reach your goal you can have those chocolate sundaes every once in awhile. With smoking it is N.O.P.E. (but hot fudge sundaes taste sooooooooo much better than cigarettes) Congrats on 93 days......almost at the beach! Windy P.S. Oh yeah...and quitting smoking/dieting both make me cranky! Mercy, * You'll never have to worry about smelling badly because you just had a cigarette. * You'll never have to worry about how yellow your teeth are and if people will notice. * You'll never have to worry about a positive test, chemo, surgery, oral cancer, saying goodbye to your loved ones, missing out on your children, grandchildren and millions of other scary thoughts that run through the back of your mind as you puff away. You make an excellent point, the finality of it does begin to sink in and it can be a little daunting. Just keep taking it one day at a time and don't forget to reward yourself! Give yourself something better than your addiction ever gave you! Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team
