I'd say that what you're experiencing isn't the "norm." and - from reading your post, it seems like you've struggled with these feelings for awhile now.
A lot of people I know started smoking to mask something about themselves they didn't want to deal with (myself included). This may be the case with you. It may not be.
All the same, if you are having these feelings for long periods of times, you should talk to your health care professional about them. There's help out there when we become overwhelmed by feelings such as these. Seek support from your friends and family if you can, and from the group, but most of all from the professionals that can guide you through rough patchs, if need be.
