Thank you all for your responses, and I did forget to say that Hubby and I are going to go to a little seaside town called Morro Bay that we love and stay there for a couple days then wander back home via the long sea side senic route (say that 3 times fast!) except it's the ocean, but who cares, it'll be lovely! And smoke free! I have been informed by a very reliable source that a 30 day ramble is expected and since I would not want to be the one to dispense with tradition, here goes: I have quit and started several times in the past, but for some reason this quit has felt different from the beginning. I am far calmer, have not become the tazmanian devil (though I will never, ever be accused of being PATIENT), and have even had a laugh or 7 at myself this time. I think it truly is your attitude and your committment to quitting that makes it almost easy to distract yourself from the thoughts and habits you have done for a long time. If everyday you had to constantly look around for a rattlesnake that would pounce on you from anywhere at all 20-30 or more times per day and you had to dodge it and leap over it, and make plans for avoiding it, and you did that for many years, and one day the rattlesnake did not show up, and never showed up again, you would still miss the thing. You would be looking around you constantly for many days, weeks, maybe even years, for that snake. Even though that snake was really bad for you, you would still "miss" it. You would still look around for it, and wonder what happened to it. You would still think of it, think of the days you spent with it. Think of addiction as the rattlesnake. You don't want it in your life and you are certainly better off without it. Yes, you were used to it, but it's such a relief that it's gone. And self talk is so very important. I believe that some of us use smoking as a way of shielding us from feeling our feelings and I believe that some of us have a low self esteem. It makes a difference if, when you drop a glass and it breaks, you say to yourself, "that was stupid of me" or you say "that was a mistake" and "I'm human, I can make mistakes". Listen to what you say to yourself. Pay attention to the thoughts you think. If you have low self esteem, you will invariably tell yourself negative things. You will berate yourself for things left undone. You will tell yourself you can't do anything right. And IT'S NOT TRUE. If you change your internal dialogue, you will find your life much improved, and in an amazingly short period of time, too. Attitude is EVERYTHING in quitting. Truly. You can make it h

Brilliant ramble Denise, I recognise the format being a UK psych nurse myself and the beauty of it is that it works really well with addiction. And double congratulations on the quit to you cos if your working environment is anything like mine (adult acute admission mental health) then it remains a heavily smoking one! Have a great time enjoying your reward, best regards, Lilly :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 189 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,678 Amount Saved: 945 Life Gained: Days: 24 Hrs: 13 Mins: 7 Seconds: 54
