Rather than pit one against the other (Quitting Smoking vs. Losing Weight), I have tried to see the issue as a whole - becoming healthier so that the rest of my life might be free from the illnesses and maladies that plague so many of us in our older years. Quitting smoking, changing my eating habits, and learning how to exercise have helped me get my cholesterol back to normal levels (from 250 to 190), my blood pressure back to normal levels (from 178/120 to 110/80), and my energy and stamina to levels I haven't had since my 30s. Sure, I'm still a few pounds over, but I'll take all the benefits over a few pounds any day.
One thing to remember: neither quitting smoking nor losing weight have an end. You can't wake up one day and say "Okay, I'm now at my goal weight -- I can go back to Twinkies for breakfast." They are life long processes, but they are also journeys and adventures to enjoy.
