Hi JuJu, I am so glad to know what this disease is called. I have noticed the same thing. But I do know what exercise is, if only I would do it as a regular daily thing. I eat those carbs on a regular daily thing. I have to get over to the site for dieting...come on and join me if you haven't already. Good luck JuJu.... Hello, my name is Shannon and I too suffer from this. LOL When I first quit smoking weight gain was my biggest concern, then some jerk (my doctor) told me that 30lbs is normal and then it tops off (whatever that meant). I have gained 20lbs and I get the comments from people "I can not see any weight gain" or "you look healthy". Yeah whatever! Honestly though, it never bothered me, I knew I gained some weight and I was okay with it because it meant I had successfully quit smoking another day. Then...one day my 7 yr old son asked me if I was going to star smoking again, I relied NO and asked why? He said "because you are fat now". OUCH!!!! For the first time I wanted a cig and I wanted it quick! (I didn't though) instead, I quickly renewed my membership to to YMCA and for 3 weeks now have been working out, dieting and guess what my results are???? NUTTIN!!!! Any suggestions??? Is there a cure??? I have heard of this strange disease - except I've heard it as "dunlop" 'cause the belly done lopped over the belt. Hi, JuJu. I did some searching around. "Dunlap's Disease" is not a real illness by medical standards, but merely an accumulation of fat in the midsection, usually the result of poor diet. I'm surprised your doctor didn't explain that. Flatlander's explanation is very close: the belly done lapped over the belt. A similar "disease" is Furniture Disease where the chest has fallen into the drawers. My guess is this is the result of a sudden influx of simple carbs which seems to be typical of quitting smoking. We can't have nicotine so we turn to snacks and most snacks are simple carbs, sugar with no nutrition (i.e. ice cream drumsticks). To keep this "disease" under control, I suggest you cut out as much simple carbs as possible, or at least minimize them. Shannon, I tend to agree with your assessment of your doctor. (grumble) Depending on where you started from, 20 lbs may or may not be healthy and may or may not improve your appearance. I've known people who could really use an extra 20 or 30 lbs. Based on what your son said, though, I'm guessing you aren't one of them. When I quit smoking in May, I vowed to not be one of those who blew up like a blimp. So much for vows. When I had to loosen a notch on the belt after the first month, I joined a gym. I started exercising and watching what I ate. I really cut back sharply on my sugar intake. No more morning brownies, cookies and Pepsi at lunch, afternoon Snickers bar, evening Cheetoes, and Pepsi at supper. My before-bed ice cream was reduced from 3 scoops to 1/2. I hit the treadmill for 1/2 hour at least three times a week, followed by another 20 - 30 minutes on various resistance machines. In spite of all that, by Thanksgiving I was up 20 lbs. Frustrating, but I pressed on. The beginning of January, I actually began to lose some weight. My Dunlap disease is no longer. Still have a belly, I always will (another story), but it's no longer sagging over my belt. I'm back to my pre-quit belt hole, my shirts again fit like they used to, I'm only 5 lbs over my pre-quit weight and expect to be at or under 226 by my 1 year. So don't be upset because you haven't had results in just 3 weeks. Just keep at it. The results will come. I'd rather have dunlap disease than exacary disease. Exacary disease is when your breath smells exacary like an ashtray! I'll take the added weight anyday. It'll go away in time.
