When I quit smoking, I started working out 1 week after I quit. It also helped me with my cravings, and depression (due to quitting). I got lucky and didnt really gain any weight, but was at 180 anyhow. I did it also, cause I knew my metabolim was going to slow down due to quitting. Then, 2 months ago, I joined Weight Watchers. I know about 3 or 4 other people on it who have lost over 20 pounds! That convinced me to join. I have just started week 8, and have lost almost 15 pounds. It seems to really work for alot of people. It took me 2 weeks to get the hang of it. And I'm happy to have a smaller butt. If you are going to diet, consider this one. Hi, charlie girl. My intention was to not be one of those people who quit smoking just to blow up like a blimp. So much for intentions. I found trying to control what I ate, which meant some deprivation, was too much to throw on top of quitting smoking. A body can only give up so much at one time. I did join a gym and began exercising after the first month, when I decided to not fight two wars at once. The exercise did help reduce the amount of weight gained, plus it's a great crave killer. That's probably why I put on just 20 pounds. Around 6 months is when I finally decided to whittle away at the weight. I'm now just 8 lbs over my pre-quit weight with a goal of being at or below it on my 1 year anny. We'll see how that goes. It isn't that important to me, but it would be a nice accomplishment. Maybe you lack proper motivation. Set a goal, an easy one like, say, walking one lap around the block each day. Not a pounds-lost goal, but an exercise-accomplished goal. Once you're in the swing of exercising, then you can go after those pounds. Congratulations on 93 days quit, charlie girl. Lillie - Like you, I could not stand the thought of being fat - I have always gone back to smoking because of weight gain, but this time, I was determined not to smoke even if I did gain weight. I put on approx 10 lbs in the first 6 months, then when I stopped being "obsessed" about weight, and stopped thinking about it ALL the time, I lost a few pounds - I do not eat any junk food and I drink lots of water, I am about 7lbs heavier than when I smoked, but have decided to just accept it. I KNOW if I smoke, the 7lbs may go, BUT then in a few months, I would think "I must stop smoking" and the whole process would just start again, and I certainly don't want to go through Hell MONTH again - lol This is the longest I have been smoke free in 40 years. My doctor told me that it is better and much healthier to be a little overweight than to smoke. Believe me, I know how upsetting it is to go up a size. Lots of us do. But you can be skinny and stink like stale tobacco smoke, or you can have a few extra pounds and start a healthy eating and exercise program. Lilly, I sure hope your husband is willing to haul your oxygen tank around if you go back to smoking. It isn't what's good for him that counts. It's what's good for you. You may rather be dead than fat, but unfortunately, that death from smoking comes very slowly. All of you, please join us on the Daily Diet Watch thread. We'd love to have you. Charlie, You first have to give yourself some credit on changing your lifestyle. Quitting smoking does bring on some unwanted symptoms. Yep, this does include weight gain! UGH!! Look at your daily schedule. Is there time for a walk a day? If so, pick a time to plan a 30min walk 5 days a week. If you can stick to this schedule for "ONE" week, then I must say you are ready to lose the weight you have gained. I am going to be starting a new thread today on weight gain. Let us moderators know if you were able to get through a week of walking for 30mins/day 5 days a week. Then we will move on to the next stage of your weigh loss :). Small steps Charlie!
