You won?t get fat when stop smoking, if you don?t overeat.

I have said this many times and I will say it again, you can quit and NOT gain weight. It takes allot of perseverence but it can be done. I have watched what I eat and did NOT replace my smoking with food. I have ate sensible and exercised, walked, swam or biked since I quit and have actually lost weight. Yes it is HARD, but it is worth it!!! Good post Rusty. I dont remember if you walked in the beginning of your quit. I walked 2 miles every morning and 2 miles every night, and it was HOT here so I sweated allot off lol. I dont know if that makes a difference or not, but everyone is certainly different. Zookie- I could have written every word of your post including the "smug" part. I made it through menopause without the menopot but this quit pot is unbelievable and humbling. I NEVER had to think about weight through lots of babies and years. Cheers to everyone who is fighting the good fight. Thanks Zookie! That was what I've been wanting to say but didn't have the words for! :) I snacked too much for the first couple of months but since then I've been very careful....yet the pounds keep on adding up. I don't know if it's a combination of quitting, peri-menopause, but I've never weighed this much...even through 4 pregnancies. And I can't seem to lose it. On the bright side :) the gain seems to have slowed down, so maybe now I can put it in reverse! Everyone is different. 3galeh and I both watched what we ate and started exercise programs, and yet I gained 12 pounds and she didn't. Go figure! Also, one factor often overlooked in this discussion is that smoking (the chemicals in cigarettes, that is) raise your adrenaline and burn at least 200 calories a day. So when you quit smoking, that's an extra 200 calories you need to burn ON TOP OF all the rest. So, it's not easy...it can be very frustrating...but as 3galeh always says, it's worth it. My doctor says you are so much healthier not smoking, don't obsess about the extra poundage. One more comment however to Ibanez. 6-8 pounds (or 12 pounds in my case) IS a big deal if it means you have to buy new clothes. 3galeh, I did start walking right away when I quit, but not as many miles as you at first. I remember being amazed that you were doing 2 miles in the morning and 2 miles at night! Metabolism, body build, heredity...they all play a part in our body shape and size. So there's no stock answer or diet or exercise routine for everyone. One of my neighbors says she will never quit smoking again, because last time she quit she gained 50 pounds. But she is also a person that eats in a very unhealthy way and sits in front of the tv at night eating candy, ice cream, etc. Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 474 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,285 Amount Saved: $1659 Life Gained: Days: 65 Hrs: 6 Mins: 24 Seconds: 7

Zookie, as always, happy to hear from you! In "Body for Life for Women" the writer discusses weight gain at menopause, and how it seems to settle primarily around our middles. She calls it "meno-pot." Rusty

Ib, Thank you for insightful information. Almost all smokers notice this. You may tend to eat more than you used to. Your body's absorption of food is improved as well, so you will gain more nourishment even if you don't eat more. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Try low calorie snacks or beverages. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
