I have friends who take the will to win to extremes, even to cheating. Where do we stop? Sports have rules, commerce seems to have few.

To Davit and Hugs,

I remember a couple of funny food stories. When I was 13, my Mom wasn't feeling well, so I tried to make my own scrambled egg. First, I beat the thing to death, then over cooked it. It turned out to be flatter than a pancake, translucent, and it had the consistency of rubber. I told my Dad I can hardly eat it and my Dad said good, 'cause I can hardly watch you eat it :)

Another time, I had made dozens of chocolate chip cookies and I would put them under plastic wrap on a plate, fresh out of the oven to keep them moist and chewy. My Dad wanted more, and I told him I had done 3 dozen and he could put the dough on the cookie tray and bake them in the oven. So, my Dad was in the kitchen for a long time and then I saw him pressing the dough into flat cookie shapes onto the tray. It was so cute that he never made cookies before. He didn't know that you put the dough into balls and then they bake into cookie shapes in the oven :)

It is hard to see things as they are when you're under stress. Believe me, I know, with my whole Florida experience :)

With your Mom icing her foot too long, I look at is as being helpful, not micro managing :)

I'm glad you feel good about yourself on one level, and don't worry about the other level :)

I know I am very hard on myself and my Mom saw that about me also when I was with her for 6 weeks. I don't how we can get out of that mind set and/or habit.

God created dogs as Man's (Woman's) best friend to get rid of the mistakes he/she makes in the kitchen.

I make three things in the kitchen well. Bread, soup and wine. Some times they turn out excellent, but not always. It keeps life interesting. Even perfect would become boring after a while. (for those interested, I don't use kits or a bread maker, they take the fun out of it.)

I prefer excellence to perfection, it has more leeway. It leaves more room for personal preference.

Shari and others,

I was just being pessimistic(catastrophic thinking), since the soup turned out fine.

Under a lot stress, I'm just not seeing things as they are. Yesterday I saw mom icing her foot too long, and I just guess I want to micro manage everything.

I'd be really popular at a nuclear reactory factory, I suppose, but when things seem out of control, I suppose I try to make other things work out more postively

As Davit states, there's no such thing as perfect. In this dish, I did reduce things since my pot was smaller than I guessed, but eventually got another, trying to be conservative, and to minimize waste.

I feel disappointed with myself on one level, but good on another level.

I may have to throw away a new recipe. The step to successful cooking(which I forgot) is to try something on a small level rather than tackle a large dish.

I guess a large dish is just a teeny one, with more of everything.

I'm having trouble controlling the amount of stuff I buy, since I want to provide and be generous to mom.

I love getting up in the morning and getting a cup of coffee and reading your Quote of the Day :) It's the perfect way to start the day with laughter and humor :) What a positive way to set the tone for the day :)

I hope the arsonists aren't burning the midnight oil either, and I hope the pyro's have it under control - ha ha.

Re: the Eggplant, I'll use the largest knitting needles I have, but then I'll have to buy an even bigger purse.

I read a compassionate story about two men that were room mates in the hospital. One had a temporary injury to his eyes and wore medical patches to cover his eyes and he could not see. His room mate would describe the lovely things going on outside of the window, so his companion could visualize what was going on. One day there were children playing in the park outside, flying kites. Another day, the circus was in town and they had a parade down the street, in front of the park. He told, in vivid detail, of all of the wonderful things he saw. It made the temporarily blind man feel wonderful. Later, the man who described what was going on outside of the window was released from the hospital. And, it was time for the other man's eye bandages to be remove. He was shocked to find that outside of the window there was a brick wall. I thought that was the perfect story to accompany your comment regarding, "As for the view from another's eyes, isn't that what compassion is about?"

Be reasonable when you knit your eggplant with respect to size. Men have large egos and we don't need any more performance anxiety

As for the view from another's eyes, isn't that what compassion is about? I found a wonderful pic from a friend, showing her view through her window, looking over her flower. My view, is in a cramped space, looking at a brick wall, and the city house backyards. I forgot to ask about some nice winter stuff to plant for beauty, but I might have an opportunity to change that if I can get to a workshop
